Another impressive piece of natural camouflage is the coat of the Lowlands Woolen Stag, which is completely covered in a perfect houndstooth pattern. Biologists believe that this distinctive pelt might have provided a defense against the deer’s natural canine enemy, the wild ancestors of today’s domestic Scottish Deerhound.

The theory is that a dog which spied a Lowlands Woolen in the forest might mistake the houndstooth pattern for actual hounds’ toothmarks, and pass up the animal thinking the good meat must already have been chewed off.

Sadly, it is no longer possible for scientists to develop this theory through observation of the Lowlands Woolen in its natural habitat. Although its houndstooth coat adaptation may have served to protect it from four-legged predators, that same coat was highly prized by haberdashers, who hunted the Lowlands Woolen Stag to extinction by the end of the 1930s.
