Agnes loved walking through Friendly Forest. It always made her happy, and she was especially happy today. The sun was shining, the leaves were rustling, and all of the animals were coming out to say hello.

“Pio!” said the pio pio bird.

“Good morning, Mr. Pio Pio Bird!” said Agnes, and watched as the pio pio bird fluttered his wings and flew away, whistling. Agnes was so distracted by the pio pio bird that she almost tripped over a fuzzy orange animal emerging from his hole in the ground!

“Oh!” Agnes said. “Excuse me! I didn’t see you there!” The fuzzy orange creature just blinked. “And who might you be?” Agnes asked.

“Squi Rrel,” the animal said in a loud, clear voice.

“Hmmn,” Agnes said. “Are you sure? I’ve never known a squi rrel to live in a burrow before. Might you be a woo dchuck? Or a pra iriedog?”

“Squi Rrel,” the orange thing said.

“Really, though?” Agnes asked. “Not a mar mot, or even maybe a fo x? I’m almost certain that squi rrels live in trees.”

“Yeah, OK —I’m sure you’re the expert, but California Ground Squirrels live in burrows, and that's what I am, you dim-bulb bimbo,” the orange thing said.

“Well, I never!” said Agnes. “If that’s the kind of rudeness I can expect from the squi rrels of Friendly Forest, I may just go and find an altogether different place to do my mescaline!”
