“Picture this: It’s after nuclear war, see. Or maybe a zombie outbreak. Or financial collapse, or climate change, or swine flu epidemic, whatever. It barely matters. Anyway, everybody’s dead. Except this kid, see. And his trusty mutt, Clyde. Or Spike, or Spot, whatever. It’s not important.”

“The dog should have a two-syllable name.”

“Beg your pardon?”

“A two-syllable name. Dogs should have two-syllable names.”

“Uh, OK, sure, if you say so. Fido, then. Or… Barker. Whatever.”

“See, most canine commands are monosyllabic. Sit, come, stay, fetch, like that. A multi-syllable name helps the dog pick it out and distinguishes it from commands.”

“Maybe ‘Melville,’ that’s a nice name.”

“Alright, so it’s Melville. That’s fine. It doesn’t matter. The writers can work on that later on. The main thing is this picture, see, it’s an end-of-the-world kind of a deal. But there’s still hope. See, the kid and his pooch, they’re friends. They’re the last friends on Earth.”

“Right! So you have this adventure story of them trying to find each other, plus the drama, the loneliness, and maybe they both look mournfully up at the moon or something.”

“Like in AN AMERICAN TAIL.”

“Uh… yeah, alright. Sure. Like AN AMERICAN TAIL. ‘Somewhere out There.’ A real family vibe. Longing to be together, see? A boy and his dog. But in a post-apocalyptic vein. A little like MAD MAX, or that other picture, what was it called…”
