we didn’t feel like doing another star wars writeup, so here’s how to change the oil and oil filter in a 1992 saturn SL2.

First, run the engine for a minute to warm the oil. Pull the parking brake. Pop the hood. Remove the fill cap (located on the SL2's valve cover).

Once you’re under the vehicle, locate the drain plug and place an oil pan or bucket beneath it.

Use a socket wrench to slowly loosen the plug by turning counterclockwise. Wait until the draining oil slows to a trickle. The oil may be hot. Don’t drink it. Removing the fill cap will expedite the drainage.

Reaffix the oil plug by hand. Do not over-tighten.

Move oil pan under the oil filter, which is located at the rear of the engine compartment on the SL2’s passenger side. Use a filter wrench to remove the filter, making sure the rubber gasket is also removed. Wipe the housing area carefully.

Lubricate the new filter with a little motor oil. Screw the new filter in place, turning clockwise until it’s sufficiently tight.

Using a funnel, pour in four quarts of oil. Replace the cap.

Start the SL2’s engine for a minute to circulate oil. Shut off the engine after a moment, and then inspect for any leaks. Check the oil level by removing the dipstick, wiping it, reinserting it and removing it once more. If it shows the appropriate level, you’re done! Get in that sweet ride and drive off into the sunset.
