When you’re one of sixteen, you take any quiet place you can get. I remember the first time I looked up instead of left or right. It was dark, and I saw this amazing light from high above me. At first I thought it was an owl’s eye and I hid, but it didn’t follow me, and it didn’t leave for better prey. I lay very low in the tall grasses and watched it move towards the west, and when I snuggled up in my burrow at sunrise, that golden light was what I dreamed about.
I got lucky- or was it the hand of fate? -and some scientists trapped me in a cage. I was worried at first, I’d never been so far from my family before. But when I saw the patch they wore and the logo on the cage… well, once I knew what I was doing, I gave it 110%. I was going to be the best candidate for the mission.
The maze, the centrifuge, the anti-gravity plane, the hundreds of hours floating in the pool, I mastered them all. And when the morning came when they locked my cage into the module, I was calm and serious. But inside, I couldn’t help but giggle. I was going! Up to that shining light I’d noticed long ago! My dream was becoming reality.
In my heart, I always knew it was a one way trip. I didn’t care. Down below me was a world so big that a mouse like me could never otherwise see it all. And I trusted that golden light. Trusted it once again would keep me safe after I’d closed my eyes.
