When you’re young, life seems very different. You’re alone, in your shell, crushed under all that dirt that’s standing between you and glory. Whatever you do, whatever you try, there’s already some root or stem or some other seed that’s already been there first. It’s new to you, but it’s not new, and so you say and do the things that have been said and done a hundred times before and you get so frustrated when they smile and nod like you’re nothing special. You are special! You are! And you’re going to prove it!

And then, that day comes when you blossom into the world. The dirt pushes aside and you feel the sunlight on your leaves. Your bud opens up. And then, you’re noticed. Now all those things you said you’d say or do the moment you had the chance… well, you’ll have to think about that. Things aren’t as clear up here as they were down there in the dark. There’s more at stake. It makes you harder up here. Thorny.

And after a little time in the sunshine, when you look back at the new shoots coming up behind you, you start to wonder if you’ve done anything worthwhile. Will they think well of you when you’re gone? Or will you just be one more corsage that got it wrong? Just an example of what those little buds never wanted to become? And when it gets cold outside, and your petals start to fall, maybe you’ll think that you didn’t do enough, and wish you’d done more.

But somewhere, there’s someone who never stopped thinking that what you accomplished was beautiful.
