Once upon a time, there was a sun who spent all day at a desk doing data entry. The sun’s coworker’s, the moon and the star, bothered him ceaselessly; never actually doing any work, they spent the entire day discussing the intimate details of their love lives and deciding aloud what flavors of jello shots they would make for next weekend’s hot tub party. Finally, the sun had broke down. “If I do not find a way to block this idle chatter from my ear, surely I will have to find a new career,” he exclaimed aloud when the moon and the star had gone on another one of their forty-five minute coffee breaks.
“I couldn’t help but overhear you express your dismay,” said the rainbow, who worked in a nearby cubicle, “And I think I might be able to help, in my own little way.” And with that the rainbow arched itself over the sun’s head. “No longer will you hear your coworker’s terrible drones, when I rest myself here, to form headphones.”
“Why, my dear friend, what an excellent band you do make,” said the sun, “but I will need to block out their talk completely, or else, I swear, my own life I will take.”
“Dear sun, you would not be able to hear the honking of an oncoming bus,” said the office assistant clouds from a nearby filing cabinet, “if you would just shroud your ears with both of us!” And so, the clouds gathered at each end of the rainbow, and the headphones were complete. With the help of his new friends, the sun no longer had to listen to the moon and the star giggle all day, and so everyone lived happily ever after. Or as happily as they could live, working soul-killing, dead-end cubicle jobs.
