It’s part of the grand rainbow of life. You fight hard to make it, you get a few seconds of free fall when you feel like you’re flying, and then, in an instant, you’re face-first into the ground. It’s the shape of the universe, and everything from an underhand toss to a fired bullet takes a parabola and ends up at rest.

But why give in? A bullet can ricochet. A thrown ball might find the bat. A dropping leaf can wind up on the breeze, or the river, or lying on some guy’s trunk as he zips to work. Just because you’re close to the end of your natural arch, that’s no reason to just say “Well, guess that’s all I get” and submit.

The last leaf knows there will be a new spring bud in the same place next year, because that’s just how it is. But that new bud opens in Spring, and Spring is a long way away.
