It was my idea. I posted that I wanted to do it in the derby thread when the theme was announced. That's why Banzaaiii commented about it on my other design.

I love the one leaning over the side to grab that fish.

I don't find this shirt to be quite as complex (story wise) as your Assault and Battery Love Story (? on title correctness)- but I do find it very humorous, and a little more wearable.

to sum up- I would proudly add both of them to my collection, I would wear both of them, I would wear this one a little more frequently, and feel more self-conscious wearing it around my grandmother.

What I like about this shirt is that it works even without the title/joke. You can explain it to your friends and all have a giggle, but there's nothing about it that would be inappropriate for grandma or bitty kids. There's nothing about it to explain.

Great work.

The rounded blocks of color made by the whales and sails that give it such a cool-looking... I dunno, visual flow? It's a neat illo.

will this get rejected for shirt color? it seems off.

I love this design! I love the colors you chose. and as someone else said, the title isn't obvious, so i could still wear it and not feel weird. ( i can only wear tshirts on friday and the weekend, which includes church)

hahaha awesome, GMV. perfect amount of obviousness. doesnt scream nasty like it has the potential of doing, and if someone gets it you know theyre cool. its also manly enough for a guy like myself to pull off.

unfortuantely though i have my doubts it will get enough votes. i only just bought my first shirts today and from looking around in the forums and seeing previous votes and what not im not sure it will, but hopefully im wrong
i want to buy three shirts in this derby, this one, the punch line, and elderberries one and none of them are in the fog :[

i do think it needs a big cannon in the rear though if you catch my drift, and the guy in the lookout can get the binocular thing ;)

I saw in the derby thread where you came up with this--can't believe you actually went with it! I was skeptical, but this turned out well. The design is surreal and funny enough that I think it works even for people who don't get the pun. And, for those that do, they get an extra chuckle

The title probably needs explained. It's not like the Seamen would be crammed down your throat...

Yay! People think this is funny! Thanks for all the support on this one. I'm tickled.

I think the best thing about wearing this shirt would be the conversation that could ensue when someone compliments it.

SOMEONE: I like your shirt.
YOU: Yeah. It's covered in seamen.
SOMEONE: What?
YOU: The sperm whales. They're seamen.
SOMEONE: Ohhh!

Note: If "someone" is grandma, maybe just say "thanks" and leave it at that. Unless, of course, your grandma rolls like that.

Maybe it was for the best that you didn't submit this prematurely then.

I'm a bit worried that the rejectionator will grab hold of it, but I'm confident it'll manage to stay up despite any cries of protest and finish shooting its way into the depths of the fog.

So Boots, the question on everyone's lips is, how does it feel to have two kick-arse entries that are fogged and in a good position to win without having to sacrifice any of your artistic integrity? Also, can you provide a step by step program for people who aren't awesome to becomes so?

I love Boots's work as well, but I do have one question, and this is an honest question, I am not attacking Boots at all. Please view this as an actual query.

People are attacking the 'cute' entries in this derby an aweful lot, as per the usual here it seems. However, the whales are quite cute...very cute in fact, I like them! But...people seem to be really angry that there's so much cute in the derby...yet, I see nothing but adoration for the cute whales. :\ Is it just because of the joke behind them? Is it because I see a lot of people here really, really, really like BootsBoots as an artist herself? (i.e. lots of comments that she's "hawt", etc)

I really just want to know why some cute entries are ok, but some are worthy of relentless houndings and attacks in other threads :\. It's ok for Boots to win multiple derbys in a row, and not be pandering...but if anyone else does anything cute..and somehow, by the grace of God, ends up in the fog or winning, it's pandering or poor integrity. I'm confused more and more by this site each week.

It's odd to me that people hate so much on the cute, yet cute is what continues to win/fog in these derbies. :\ I made one cute entry that has happened to do well, and suddenly, I'm evil. But other cute entries are just fine :D. -sigh-

Also, this is not sour grapes, I happen to think my turtles don't deserve the fog either :\. I drew them on a lark. But the random hatey-hates still baffle me, as the top 5 shirts are still 'cute' entries. (ones I will purchase ^_~)

Good luck Boots, this is not anything to do with you, just more a general question about the workings of this environment. Your work is always great .

I can't speak for the entire community, but I think people have a problem with cute for the sake of being cute. Cute is okay as long as it's not the only element carrying the design. I don't think I have seen a design from boots that is cute just to be cute. There is usually a story that it tells (IE: "assault and battery love story") or it is juxtaposed with something sinister or less "G" rated (IE: "We Careves People").

(snip)

I can't speak about your "cute" designs, but I know that the differences between Boots cute and Seki/Ramy cute are:

1. Boots either has a better understanding of anatomy and cartooning, or else just has a style that works well with what she does know (I haven't researched and can't say). Ramy and Seki consistently have anatomical errors that, to some, detract from the rest of the image. The whales in Seamen are anatomically dubious (the only whale that can bend its neck/spine like that is the Beluga! the more you know) but the whole design is fantasy/whimsical so it's not a distraction.

2. Boots cute isn't "stereotypical anime", which is a style that many people can't be ambivalent about: they either love it or hate it.

3. It may be contended that Boots' designs are "more original" and that sekiramy's cute anime stuff might be held in higher regard if it wasn't the same stock characters and borrowed ideas every week.

These are simply my observations, others may append/reject as they see fit.

I draw things! | feel free to call me "xaz" or "xazy", I'm down with that.

I think some of the posters on this site can detect actual artistic talent and originality. Boots does have a fairly cute style but her entires from week to week vary wildly in content, and she's pretty good at sticking with a theme from what I can tell. Ramy/Seki get alot of flak because many of their shirts are very similar not only in style (shiny anime) but also in content, you see the very same characters in most Ramyb shirts, and people love pointing them out as proof of unoriginality. They have also won plenty of derbies by submitting designs barely on theme or blatantly off-theme but get lots of votes because there are people out there who will vote for ANYTHING if it has a cute anime puppy on it, regardless of quality, originality, or relevancy to the theme.

YOU Bass, got flak for your cute kitty design not just because it was cute, but because of the opinions you were posting in the thread regarding doing anything you can to win derbies even if it means drawing fluffy anime every week. This is what Ramy-Seki do, and it gets them alot of hate for it. Well they get lots of hate for plenty of other reasons, stuff you'll probably learn over time if you stick around. If you want to avoid that fate I'd suggest not falling into an artistic rut and express yourself creatively from week to week, don't just pander to the kitty crowd.

There's cute as in "My girlfriend would look cute in this," and then there's the cute shirt you'd see on a toddler, a pre-teen or somebody's grandmother. A guy wouldn't buy a cute shirt for himself, but he might buy it for his girlfriend. He wouldn't buy a toddler-cute shirt for his girlfriend, because that would be sick, and not in a good way.

Some people hate all cute shirts, and some people hate all of Drakxx's style too. You can't take individual comments and say that it's what the community thinks. There is no such thing.

I like most of what you've done so far, but honestly your attitude is beginning to annoy me. You project an air of entitlement. In another post you mentioned that your art in the last derby didn't get the attention it deserved. Huh? How deserving do you think you are?

In your very first derby, cooking, you got nice remarks and an HM. In the next, you got two designs into the top ten. Some artists would sell their grandmother's ashes to get that sort of recognition.

Then you whined and talked about pandering when you posted the cat because your other designs weren't getting the votes you wanted. You sure got attention then, didn't you?

There are a lot of artists and a lot of designs, and only three winners each week. Some of the best and most beloved artists here will go long periods without printing. To have you show up and talk about what you deserve and how hard you work is silly, at best, and possibly a bit egotistical. Other artists work hard, draw well and want to win, too.

Maybe you're socially inept or maybe you're getting bad advice from your friend, but you're not winning fans by being whiny and needy and stirring up flame wars. Just turn in the best art you can and if it makes people happy, they will vote for it. If it doesn't get votes, get over it. You aren't going to be the queen of every derby.

Lots of astute observations.

Bassanimation: you see the truth. As a long time observer (much longer than my join date), I have also noticed all you mentioned, and not understood it either. The critics bash many, but some designers (Not just BB) seem to avoid the bashing even if their design of the moment has the same complained about elements (whether it be cute, off-topic, pandering, rehashed designs, repetitive designs etc, etc, etc) as the flamed designs with heavy criticism and much debate and anger in their threads.

The Assault and Battery is an example. It's already been done in several different ways that could easily have been rejected. If another designer (with the exception of other 'above the flames' ones) had submitted a similar design and it fogged, the thread would be filled with snipes about the lack of creativity, recycled ideas, it has been done before, etc etc etc. Instead, you have a few people pointing out similar shirts and many defending it, but nothing like the 80% hate thread it would be if it was a less beloved designer.

It's been a long-time observation that BB, no offense to her, seems to be one of those lucky designers who does not get heavily bashed, no matter what she submits or how many times she wins. The most vocal critiques will admit in other threads when confronted that her fogged or high-placing design is off-topic or questionable etc etc etc - but they don't complain in her thread, and certainly don't fill her thread with caustic negativity the way they do with others. Her threads tend to have far more praise and gushing than anything else. She'll get a few negative ones here and there, but overall her threads are very positive.

It's more than likely that at least some of the gushing comes as a result of her posting her picture in her signature, as there will be some people that like the fact that she is a young woman, or like her looks and it unconsciously or consciously makes them favor her. Question to those reading - Is this too, a form of pandering? More than likely. There are probably lots of good looking designers here at shirt-woot, but she capitalizes on being someone who doesn't care about privacy and is more vain (or whatever her reason is to put her picture in her signature). And she probably gets a decent number of votes and gushing based on her advertising her picture - not really the most honorable part of her popularity imho. Not saying that the pic alone is why she wins, as she has talent and sometimes creates good designs, but if anyone says that her ever-present picture has nothing to do with her popularity/immunity from flamers/gushing - think about it some more. Yes, there are other designers without pictures who also have adulation and low flames, but if BB didn't post her pic everywhere she posts, there wouldn't be 'hawt' comments - and 'hawt' votes.

BB - this probably sounds pretty negative towards you, and it's not meant to be, other than the inclusion your picture in your sig. I like some of your designs, I dislike others.. I think you win more than your designs deserve, but still overall you seem talented, and are lucky to be so favored that even when the usual critics don't like your work, they'll hold their tongues or at most say it politely.

Bass - you've already got some negative backlash from your designs, what you've said(and from your comment on here), and that stinks. The random hate to some, while others are immune no matter what they do, stinks. Of course hating and rudeness in general plain old stinks! Woot really is a messed up world, where people are shallow, mean and rude - but not to all.
People have already started arguing with your long post on here, but your observations are still apt. Good luck.

BB - I'd wish you luck too, but you don't need it. You're one of the lucky ones on here already.

Using other accounts to back yourself up was clearly the only way to make your point?

You're a decent artist, Bass. Let your designs speak for themselves. This type of thing won't help you get votes or fans.

I'd also like to point out that your turle shirt isn't the most original either....

Junka is not Bass, they registered before Bass was aware of woot, let alone involved.
But for you 0 wooters, coming in and standing up for an artist you like usually does more harm than good :-/ Please go buy some shirts. There are a ton of great ones out there, and it means you can comment without looking so hollow.

But yeah, please don't put Junka's words in BAnimation's mouth.

Welcome to the internet, have you been here long? (clearly not since you've mastered the technique of hiding behind alternate accounts) If you can't handle some simple flaming and trolling I suggest you get out of the kitchen so to speak.

Sounds pretty sexist to me, not to mention immature. Completely uncalled for IMO, Boots is a talented artist and has been nothing but a positive contributor to this site on the boards. It's a pretty well accepted fact that the majority of voters in the derby don't read the threads and may not even be aware of popular artists and all the drama surrounding some entries. Regular posters and readers on this site are a minority compared to all the voters and customers. This is true for most websites like this and online gaming forums and such. Suggesting that Boots' success is due (even partially) to a small picture in a sig on a message board is ludicrous and insulting to her and the community in general.

Of course, by defending her it will only further convince people like you that she's only popular and successful because you think she's hot. Juvenile.

To be clear - I don't 'like' Bassanimation (or dislike either). She hasn't been in the derbies that long. I wrote because I found truth in what she said, and have noticed the same unfair trends over time she mentioned - I've just been observing them much longer.

If it seems I was standing up for bass, it has nothing to do with liking her, only feeling for her and any other artists that don't have the same untouchable status as some designers here. I'm sure soon there will be MANY people angrily defending BB from the observations I made, but I felt bad for bass already getting hammered for speaking what I've noticed to be true for a long time.

Also, being a 0 wooter really has nothing to do with the ability to make observations of the derby over a long period of time. For all you know, I could own hundreds of shirts from other tee sites and simply not liked any woots. Or, I could be too poor. Or, I could be married to someone and we buy shirts on that account. Buying a few shirts doesn't mean your observation skills are any more sharp then a 0 wooter who has been here a long time watching.

Thanks for staying polite though. I'm sure others won't be.

It doesn't even matter if Junka is indeed somebody other than Bass, the post is still ridiculous.

You are certainly right that this is no place for this discussion, this thread used to be a punny good time! I suggest Bassanimation keep her whining to her own entry threads.

The main reason this thread isn't filled with complaints is that Bootsboots isn't a repeat offender who has consistently warranted complaints. Unfair? Perhaps. But that's more or less the reason.

That said, I'd say that Seki's design this week, while nowhere near as good, is no more meriting of a rejection than this one.

And saying that people are cutting her slack because she posts her picture in her sig is just insipid.

Edit- I didn't read the preceding posts and didn't realize you were referring to Bass, and it'd be unfair to call Bass a "repeat offender" anything.

Bass-

People don't hate cute. People hate stuff that contains little artistic value that goes for votes by featuring dead-eyed critters in non-creative situations.

I'm not saying that applies to your work, of course.

That, however, is the rub. I didn't see many complaints when "Larkitecture" won its derby, because it was a clever, wonderfully bright and colorful design that merited lots of votes. Cute designs are great when they're clever and funny, and do more than simply depict the visual pun. This design does all of that.

I love animals, but unles something incredibly amazing is going on with them; I just don't find them wearable.

-Whales on a ship, NA
-Whales in space, Na (over-done)
-Whales (beluga) playing banjos and jugs, dressed as rednecks, on the front porck of a shack (underwater)... Priceless

There are somethings that prize money can buy, but for everything else... Imagination.

Well, if you want a non-bodily-fluid pun, there's one that's pretty safe that hasn't been used to full effect. Somewhere up above someone spelled "whales" as "wales" So you could make some comment about the whales being from Wales.

I really wish people would stop wailing on Boots by spouting these ridiculous rumors. There's nothing fishy about me voting for this design - I like cute things when they're well done, creative, and not filled with artistic inconsistencies. It does bug me though when people blubber about a design that's unwearable and uncreative *just* because the art is cute. But, eh. Not really something to blow steam about.

you could have said that when reading those threads, Boots was the only person you didn't want to... come to blows with?

Funny thing is that I never even noticed the photo until it was mentioned. Now I can't un-see it. Aaahhh! My eyes! The horror!

Same... I had to look back at her posts to realize she did have a pic of herself there.
And although BB is beautiful. Beauty doesn't equal talent... And if she's winning often, I believe it's more because of talent than because of a small picture that happens to be in her signature that links to her blog.
And talent that manifests itself in various tshirt designs based on a theme doesn't necessarily mean that they will all be liked either. I like how BB is varied. (That doesn't mean that I like all of her shirts though). Votes also are partially (it has some influence... a person wouldn't wear a shirt color that really doesn't work with them only for the image itself as much as a person would like that image) based on whether the shirt is wearable, color and possibly other random preferences...
Anyhow, not the point.

I like the Seamen =P
Since I haven't a punny joke and am unable to come up with one without it probably being extremely horrible, here's a short pointless anecdote:
and am reminded of Moby pretzel twist... and a passage about using whale sperm... to make candles? or was it something else... In English, our professor gave us a sheet with text that was from the book and the enjoyment of touching whale sperm... and I had problems trying to not laugh or giggle while she read the passage...
