WHat you may want to do is change the saber so it doesn't look exactly like one from Star Wars. Duplicating a movie saber is a great way to earn the wrath of Lucasfilm Stormlawyers.
However, prop saber makers (like Parks Sabers http://www.parksabers.com/ ) make props that are recognizably light sabers without touching on Lucas copyrights.
