dancing fire? That fire looks like it is ready to engulf the whole island. Love it! ![]()
Re: Luau Fire
Love the style and especially the color choices. Nicely done.
Re: Luau Fire
I love the 'toon-shaded' style... reminds me of Zelda: Wind Waker.
This is totally minor, but it makes me uncomfortable anyway. The reflections in the water would both travel the length of the water reflection and they tend to taper off at the end, not just stop abruptly. The length of the line is based on the brightness of the source, so the moon reflection would be longer than the fire reflection if anything.
I absolutely love the design, but that inaccuracy would probably keep me from buying it. (I know, I know, that's so sad! I can't help it.
)
This kind of shows what I'm talking about with the brightness vs. length of reflection. More examples could be found by googling I'm sure.
Re: Luau Fire
Really great work Sokowa. In for at least one when this wins. ![]()
GravityJMB wrote:I love the 'toon-shaded' style... reminds me of Zelda: Wind Waker.
Exactly what I was going to say. Great choice of style Sokowa.
Reminds me of The Curse of Monkey Island.

you always have some fantastically unique designs ... great as always
Thanks for all the comments!
@anneandkita - Thanks for the good points. I see what you mean. normally I'd catch that, I was up until 3am on this one :/
Zelda and Monkey Island were my inspirations :D. I always wanted to try their styles. I won't lie, it made me want to dig up my monkey island collection as I was drawing this. Ah the memories.
Re: Luau Fire
I like the new style a lot. I love the colors. I wouldn't wear it though.
Re: Luau Fire
love it sokowa! the reflection in the water totally makes it for me. great work!
Re: Luau Fire
Very pleasing design... love the swirls. The reflection on the water is also really nicely done. GMV!
GravityJMB wrote:I love the 'toon-shaded' style... reminds me of Zelda: Wind Waker.
Definitely like Wind Waker. I love this style. Very very cool.

Cripes, it's a shirt! It's not like it's going to be hanging in the Louvre! If all the shirts submitted were held to such high expectations, we'd have no zombies, smiling animals, talking monsters and the like. Life is full of inaccuracies, I dig the individuality and it's a cool take on it; reflections "perfect" or not.
Re: Luau Fire
Awesome job sokowa! but, minor questions... where did those islanders get the wood for that fire? i mean.. theres only two trees in the whole place!at least theres only two left.. not very environmentally sound..
maybe they should burn corn instead.

I know...and she knows...she even felt bad for admitting that it bugged her but its just an opinion, just like its just a shirt...
Re: Luau Fire
Thank you to all the comments!
@kylemittskus - thanks for liking the style. I plan on trying a few more things in future derbies like this. Maybe if I polish it up and hit the right design there'll be one you'll wear
@AnnaJo - thanks anna, your fire effect is lovely as well. I like how we have two fire designs in the fog atm but both representing it completely differently.
@cenerslaveshop - *giggles*, thanks. But it's ok. Anneandkita had a well written comment and I appreciate those since someone took the time to point out examples, etc. I took no offense.
@ Patchitect - thanks Patchitect, I always love your ideas and style. So for this to catch your eye makes me happy
Sadly they burned the raft and the cruise ship that came by to rescue them, but man . . what a party.
@SmijinGT - wooHoo!
Another great design sokowa. Got my vote and I will be in for at least 1!
This is my favorite design of yours yet, sokowa. Nice one!
Edit: This reminds me of one of my all-time favorite games: The Curse of Monkey Island.
I was thinking zelda windwaker. Anyway, it is absolutely beautiful. The colors really pop out. Very very good job

Ha! So there's a reason I was reminded of The Curse of Monkey Island. Terrific shirt, I'm definitely in for one if it makes it.
great style!
Re: Luau Fire
Awesome design sokowa (as always). GMV. I especially love the reflections in the water. Beautiful. Best of luck staying fog-bound.
anneandkita wrote:This is totally minor, but it makes me uncomfortable anyway. The reflections in the water would both travel the length of the water reflection and they tend to taper off at the end, not just stop abruptly.
But the photo is of smooth water, choppy water reflections are different.
The style you used on this reminds me a lot of the cell shaded games like okami which considering the color palette restrictions is a good thing. gmv.
Re: Luau Fire
love it ,would buy it. would love to be there too. only not close to the fire. the trees have a great sway to them.
sokowa wrote:AH! I guess fog and fire don't mix :P
Don't fret yet Sokowa...it's still early in the competition. It's always tough when you fog so early in the derby because you are always wondering what's going to happen. Sometimes it's nicer to fog closer to the end of the competition...just so you have a better sense of where you stand relative to the others. Does that make sense?
Still...it's only Sunday...so there's lots of voting still to take place.
edit: I just saw your post above and your skull's face on the stick. After reading your comments, I imagine your chagrined face looks a bit like his expression as well. But again...it's still very early in the voting. Who knows what will happen.
Re: Luau Fire
Love it, definitely feeling your windwaker inspiration here.
I REALLY dig the cell-shaded look, you did a great job with it.

Thanks KLS
Makes sense. If I win I win, If I don't I don't. I draw for myself first and foremost. I'm also using the derbies to find ways to feel out new styles. (I see myself as an artist of many styles, but master of none) :P I'll truly fret closer to Thursday, unless by then I'm far enough out of the fog I can relax again instead of wonder.
Until then I'm drawing other ideas on the side in this style. I'll most likely burn out on it eventually and move on, but until then CELL SHADED SWIRLS ARE MULTIPLYING ON MY HARD DRIVE!

YES! Exactly what i was gonna say! most underrated game ever! GMV!
Re: Luau Fire
SO cool. I love the way you illustrated the flames and smoke. But it's the reflection that sealed the vote for me. Awesome!
andrewg2 wrote:But the photo is of smooth water, choppy water reflections are different.
Actually it's a long exposure, the water is choppy. Regardless, even in choppy water, the reflections travel in a line.

P.S. I love the style of this shirt as I'm a huge windwaker and Curse of the Monkey Island fan. I love the clouds and how they go out of the edge of the sky background. It's expertly done and I love the design. The reflection just bothers me because I'm a picky be-yatch. Sorry!

ha ha, maybe that's part of a puzzle . . you need to arrange the reflection in the right way to make it look correct! then you get a giant monkey shaped triforce.

:O :O Interactive t-shirts!! It'll be the next big thing!!!
Also, GMV because even with my issues, I think it's the coolest shirt in the derby and definitely belongs in the fog.
noooo! This needs to win! It's the only one I'd buy...
Re: Luau Fire
I haven't had the time lately to submit anything but I thought I would see what's up on woot, both of your entries for this derby are really nice Sokowa! wonderful job, I really like the style! your the only one who gets my vote for this derby. Great work and best of luck!
sorry to see this one out of the fog Who doesn't like fire?

Wow, thanks! I was wondering when we'd see your designs.
Re: Luau Fire
I'm truly appalled that this is no longer in the fog. Must find a way to vote more than once....
Re: Luau Fire
mm it's a shame this one's so far back :/ what's your other design in this derby soko?
AnnaJo wrote:I'm truly appalled that this is no longer in the fog. Must find a way to vote more than once....
I was bummed to see it not in the fog to! between it and the fire dancer, those were my 2 faves!
