Fee! Fie! Foe! Fum!

Be a giant for Halloween! Also wearable year round.

The colors and perspective, as always, are grand. You have a real gift of knowing the exact amount of necessary detail, and it comes out so clean. I'm actually wearing "pander tree" at the moment, so my compulsion to vote is even stronger.

Great idea, as usual! I really wish "Jack" was positioned a little differently though :o( I am afraid this would inspire wisecracks about the female anatomy... Tough call to make. I'm not sure if there's anyplace "safe" given the requirements of the print area.

fHalcyon wrote:sorry tgent. I've seen what you're capable of and this isn't your best work. Aside from that, this is just barely a costume. I would like to see something more on the shirt to show that the wearer is a giant. As it is, he's just a guy in a green shirt with a little robin hood climbing on him. You always to great work but I feel like you're coasting here.

Thanks for your opinion, but I wholeheartedly disagree. Yes, I could have added a bunch of stuff all over the shirt like buttons, patches, vests, etc. but it's my opinion that it would look cheesy and no one would want to wear it. It's the equivalent to a tuxedo shirt, which rightfully has the place as one of the dumbest fad shirts ever conceived. I very purposefully exercised restraint in adding extraneous details.

It doesn't have to have a bunch of fake stuff plastered all over the shirt to make it a costume, it simply has to convey the concept that when the person is wearing the clothing, he or she "becomes" something else. Since everyone seems to be clear that the person wearing this is the giant in Jack and the Beanstalk then it definitely qualifies as a costume. And as for coasting, I spent 3-4 hours on this and it wasn't particularly easy.

I absolutely agree that you did this tastefully by not adding tons of cheesy details. For an attractive shirt it was the right choice to make.

However, that doesn't change the fact that when I saw this I thought robin hood, and it wasn't until I read the title that I got what you were going for. Every person here has read the title, and I bet that's why they're clear on what the costume is. However a person wearing this won't have a title on them to explain who they are. Although I guess they could walk around saying "fee fi foe fum" all the time.

I'm not asking for patches or a vest. Just some little detail to show that it's a giant. I'm sure you could figure out how to do it tastefully. You're good at this stuff.

How about the needle and thread that's 100 times bigger than it should be for a character that size? Also the harp in his bag is from the story Jack and the Beanstalk. There's enough there that even without the title people would be able to figure it out. I'm quite happy with it as it is.

As long as you're happy. And you're getting votes too. I didn't intend to be mean. I went to an art school where every single piece we did was bluntly (and often viciously) critiqued by the entire class and I think sometimes is best to hear what people really think instead of just the good things.

Really great! As always. But I'm worried too about the placement But unless you put it on the back (which would be pretty cool - then the giant wouldn't see Jack coming, right?) I don't know where would be good for this one.

It's definitely cool, though

Re: Fee! Fie! Foe! Fum!

Just for Gentry's sake, I agree with him that this design is recognizable even without the title. I remember seeing it on the forums before the derby began and being particularly blown away by its creativity and simplicity in design. I also attend an art school, and I know how harsh a critique can be. We have one teacher who turns final assignments into paper planes if he feels necessary, Tgentry I doubt your design would be victim to this teachers cruel origami.

schof

quality posts: 0 Private Messages schof

I may be in the minority here, but the themes are not all that important to me. What I care about is people seeing the shirt and say "whoa, sweet shirt". I don't expect people walking past to say "Dude, this totally reminds me of movie titles reinterpreted" or "Hey, is this shirt trying to reflect some kind of art into words type thing". I think derbies are fun and all, and I am glad for the direction for the artists because I think it adds to inspiration.

Simply, this shirt is incredible.

The shirt is creative, entertaining, and perfectly executed. tgentry you amaze me...

I love this design. I think it works as a costume (and I got the concept right away, even without the title), but you could also wear it just as a cool shirt. I don't particularly love the idea of "holiday" designs that I can only wear once a year, and I would totally wear this shirt on a normal day. Great work, tgentry!

Yeah, I think the beanstalk idea would be a terrific costume...when Jack had the harp he was descending the beanstalk. Green pants, a few leaves and branches, an ax in your leg if you require some Halloween gore...as noted above it is also a fine piece of artwork. Well done, TG.

Exactly. I like the fact that his journey will appear all that more difficult by having to scale the Mammary Mountains. Depending on placement, however, I worry poor Jack might be totally lost in the shadow of said boob and won't be seen again. Although, that might add to the funny. Either way, GMV.

Thanks tgott6. As for the Lassie shirt, I am planning on redoing the art for it and submitting to threadless or something. I actually didn't think it would do as well as it did and had only a couple of hours to put it together. I think with some improved art it might stand a better chance of getting printed somewhere. If/when it ends up somewhere else I'll post something about. Thanks for the interest!

Nice! Simple, but wonderfully detailed. Thought it was a Zelda reference when I saw the thumbnail, and wouldn't have voted for it. Zelda is pretty much played out. But the quality made me curious (and I couldn't remember anything about a harp in Zelda), so I checked out the comp. I love the design. Thanks TGentry.

BTW.. What's with the hating on TGentry. I doubt a significant percentage of voters actually participate in the threads or would know him from any other artist. People vote on what they like. It just so happens that TGentry is good at making shirts people like. I rarely know who the artist is for any design I vote for. I see what I like and vote for it.

i'm going to say that it will be unlikely for woot to throw any gold on this, even if it would look sweet, for the same reasons woot has done beer and cig designs for dailies and not derbies, and the same reason glow ink still isn't allowed. Lord knows exactly what those reasons are, but I quite believe it's so woot doesn't have to shell out specialty ink prices on what are often amateur grade winners, one more way skilled designers get the shaft in the derby. If it's possible, the derby ain't the place, and since woot has hangups about printing derby artists as dailies if they're successful, we may sadly never get to see what you can do with specialty inks.

Well it would be really cool, and I happened to ask the proper authorities about it. Unfortunately while they do have a gold glitter ink, it doesn't hold a fine line and until they find something that does they won't offer it to artists, just internal products. That's the official word.
