I really like the sense of atmosphere created in this design. The larger bird behind the little birdie really helps to give nice depth and the colors are perfect! And did I mention the fact that it looks amazing on the tee? The placement is spot on! If this doesn't get printed its a shame...

First thing that popped into my head when I saw this. Although it is nice, I don't see much that defines it from the other recent phoenix entries and I would hate to see another restriction. I just think that phoenixes currently have lost their novelty and although the art may be great, I'm not very enthusiastic about it.

Considering this is only the second time She has done a Phoenix design(There was one on her Emergency Derby Design), I think it would be a shame for this to get rejected, especially when you consider that the theme is practically suited for it. And judging by the votes so far, it's well received and quite deserving of a print. So lets have a nice shirt get a print, because I would love to have another one of Finny's Shirts in my closet.

this looks to be the best phoenix design i've seen; that being said, -after- this derby, i hope they are banned. this is a fine send-off however.
I like the idea, but it's not something I'd wear on a shirt...that, and I am in the "phoenixes are overdone" camp. I do enjoy how this is not quite your typical phoenix shirt, however...so nice job there.
Okay I just looked through the past eight Derbies and I only found one printed Phoenix, one non-printed Phoenix and one non-printed design that had a very small Phoenix included in the composition.
Now there were a whole lot more dragons, chicken and eggs, penguins, etc than Phoenixes.

There are many things that people complain are memes, but I really don't see them all that often, and especially not printed. Meh.
I'm tempted by this one because I love phoenixes (phoenices?) and don't yet have a shirt featuring them, and this one is one of the best I've seen (though I still regret Fantasma not printing 
). The dark colours worry me though.

This is the first phoenix item ever that has not only tempted me, but has me making grabby hands at my monitor. I will absolutely buy this, though I do wish it didn't have:
-the diagonal stripe accenting
-black background (yes, appropriate and visually appealing, but TOO MANY BLACK SHIRTS, and I think navy would be rad, with the current blueish design as a cobalty-purple (purple against orange is especially awesome)
But, those are not huge quibbles. I love the mix of dramatic, artsy fantasy with the cute (but not cutesy) baby phoenix - it's a really unique take. <3

It's like the dragons, giant squid, kraakens, & unicorns...basically any popular fantasy creature is going to be appealing because many of us are very nerdy and were you find nerds, you find fantasy.

I really like the diagonal lines in lieu of using halftones or crosshatching. A very elegant solution.

How about just a solid, lighter colour/shade instead (as in one of the early drafts of this design)? I can see where you are coming from, but to me it sort of clashes with the organic, swirly, naturalness of the design.

I really like the baby phoenix--to me, it sets this design apart from the (many) other swirly bird/tree/fish designs that show up oh-so-often.

I joined woot! today, bought a shirt (after I found out that a purchase must have been made at some point prior to voting) and wanted to share my thoughts on this design. This design first caught my eye because it is a simple IMO, yet, a very cool concept. The more I thought about it though, I came up with this. Another woot derby has ended, a new one begins. Just as 2008 has ended, 2009 is just beginning. Hopefully, we shake off the soot and ash from the recent years both domestically and globally to rise up and pick the best damn shirt for the first woot! derby of 2009.
@eHal - I adore the Phoenix. My obsession with the it began with the item "Phoenix Down" in Final Fantasy games. I just got Jimiyo's Hope Phoenix (Tee Fury) in the mail yesterday and it looks incredible. It puts mine to absolute shame. Mitohapa did one for DBH that was beautiful too. It unfortunately hasn't been printed. What was Fantasma?
See, I admit the Phoenix is done, but on other sites, not Woot. Only one Phoenix that I know of has been printed at Woot.

If I had time and more skill, I would have done my own halftone--like Jimiyo can do. Something more curvy like you said. As far as the black shirt is concerned, yes, there are a lot of black shirts, but black was the only color I thought suited this design.

The one on DBH - are you talking about the constellations design she did for the 10k? Because technically, that one didn't have a phoenix. It would have been the vermillion bird of the south (along with the other Four Symbols.

You dont see a lot of baby phoenixes so its nice to see them just hatched.. i did one for a daily last year for the new years, but it didnt "Fly"

It's a gorgeous phoenix shirt, but I'm still unable to convince myself that the world is lacking in phoenix shirts such that this adds to it over some of the other designs in the hunt.

I love this. And I'd like to just take a minute and say "Leave the Phoenix shirts alone!" They're absolutely amazing in both concept, the story behind them - and what they represent. As for there being too many - perhaps I live too far in the north east..but I've never seen anyone out in public wearing a phoenix shirt..so shush! And lets see this one printed so I can start wearing one! XD

That's a dragon, and this design in a phoenix, which is a creature known to be reborn from ash and fire. I'm not the artist, but I do know her...and I doubt she's even seen this dragon picture before. Her inspiration was simply that she loves the phoenix, so she drew what she believes its birth to look like.

Exactly why I thought it might be inspiration and did not say it was some sort of attempted copy. It is not the same animal but it had the same feel to it, with the glowing body and the rising from a mound (volcano vs pile of ashes, I get the differences). And just for the record I am well aware of what a Phoenix is (look back at derby #5 or so, I made it to the Fog with a Phoenix)
