They match fine. The only problem in the original was the funky image background in the design detail.

I'm not so sure about the placement of his pupils. They seem to be staring off the shirt rather than toward the center of the canvas.

I still voted and will definitely buy it if it wins.

Hm. Something going up towards the top - a tall ladder, perhaps. Just something that, for people with a gut, won't result in this shirt always amounting to a distorted image stretched over the stomach and curved.

christ almighty, i'm gonna get flamed for this . . . . . but, if you have a gut, do something about it. if you need an artist to modify the design to accommodate your stomach, you should maybe eat less and exercise more?

If you're going to make art with a practical purpose, face the reality of its use.

Although I usually abhor placement at the bottom, this one is different for me. The concept is cool! The only thing that would hold me back is that after a period of time and after various meals, the canvas wouldn't be blank anymore, if you catch my meaning.

It looks like clip art to me. I'm not saying it is clip art, it just looks like it. The blank canvas idea isn't bad, but the art style is too elementary.

I think the real problem is how many people are too fat to wear these t-shirts - the tucking in part is usually just out of necessity to prevent "under-gut" from spilling out.

im sure a tucked in shirt like that would look great with a braided belt and JNCO jeans.

I couldn't imagine a more perfect outfit for this shirt, save for maybe the inclusion of Teva (TM) sandals and some warm black socks.

That's why I like it so much. I never vote for the fancy artsy shirts. I like designs that are clever, rather than just eye candy.

There are typically two philosophies for shirt design. 'Art as shirts' or 'shirts as art'. And at least from my experience, most people are pretty set in which one they like.

The only thing about this design that I can't understand or get behind is why Adder seemed to like it after his multiple tirades against simplicity, anime, and stick figures. No insults because I LIKE the stick figure shirts, but this is about a half step up from it.

Sorry kids, the "tuck the shirt" comment was because I thought it would be funny to wear a blank shirt save a round bulbous head (with eyes!) coming out of my pants. Step back, I don't know how big this thing is gonna get...

You don't get it because you didn't understand my multiple tirades to begin with.

It's hardly high art, but what it is is a smart design choice. It has a concept that required thinking up and uses the shirt well. The style, while simple, is distinctive... while it has similarities to Boots' waterslide ponderer, you couldn't mistake the two (unlike Pom and Poko's entries, which may as well be the same person).

It's not my favorite thing in the derby by a long shot, but it is my favorite in the fog because of how it works the shirt. Sort of like how you might not like an actor's offscreen persona, but you can't help but enjoy how he inhabits a role. This design just works as a shirt, largely due to it's self-referentiality. Stick figures don't work as anything (and when you can create a more distinctive bubbly guy like this with not so much effort, why would you choose something as inherently ugly as stick figures anyway?), anime is trite and mindless, and simplicity is only bad when it's synonymous with thoughtless. Careful readers would note that I've praised many a simpler piece because its concept was solid or else its lines, few though they might be, were well chosen. They'll also note I've laid into a number of "artistic" shirts for making no statement and bringing nothing interesting to the table... lines impersonating artistry. It might be unexpected, but it shouldn't be that hard to grasp.

I guess where we've disagreed then is on whether or not a concept was good. I appreciate that it uses the shirt as a shirt in a creative way that other concepts that I consider good didn't, but that doesn't mean that the clever or witty concepts are any less deserving of a print.

I guess the distinctiveness kind of throws me off. I wouldn't consider this really any more or less distinctive than the varying stick figures that we've seen in the last few derbies, and yes, the styles have varied.

As I've argued in the appropriate threads where we've HAD this argument, while I would prefer a guy like this over any stick figure, sometimes a guy like this, stylistically, just doesn't seem to click in the same way. I guess what causes the most confusion/lack of understanding seems to be your rather fluid determinations of what constitutes a solid concept or making a statement or other such criteria. I'm not berating this. Opinions should change. But when you're as vocal as you are, it seems hard to follow because the way in which you present your opinion makes it seem like it is and should be superior to that of everyone else's (tone and such essentially berating people that buy shirts that you don't seem to like).

I'll concede the anime point. It is an art style, but it tends to produce shirts that look like they could have been designed by the same person when, in reality, they were designed by two drastically different people. If a designer can incorporate anime elements or the entire style while still making it unique (not something that I'm saying HAS happened), then that's fine by me.

As for simplicity, once again, we approach a rather vague area of what you consider to be a thoughtless concept. One could argue (I wouldn't because I like the shirt) that this shirt is "thoughtless." I know you don't feel that way, but there's many times when you reach that conclusion without too much clue as to exactly why.

That's where the confusion is for me.

But it's hidden behind a rather snarky style of posting, and you do have the shiny crown that I bestowed upon you recently, so <3!

Wait a second. We aren't calling this anime, right? Because I think that would be giving it too much credit. There are simple designs and then there are three identical paint cans copy and pasted with a different fill color.

No one is calling this anime. When I rattled off those things, it wasn't that they were all found on this shirt.

Once again, the voters of woot (Original content not provided.) and select a "artsy" shirt with a dumb and overused subject like Phoenix that looks absolutely stupid wearing around in real life, but fails to vote in a genius idea that is well executed AND makes sense for if you're an artist.

Actually, if you want to target a shirt, your only beef is with the Mickey Mouse shirt. The phoenix shirt has been fogged and hotness'd for days. I hope I'm wrong, but the Mickey shirt probably won't make the cut, and this one wouldn't have either.

ell, the problem is that the Phoenix shirts was fogged in the first place. Phoenixes aren't even original anymore! It is a nice design, I'm not saying it is, but come on. Theme has been overdone.

Its been done less than a handful in a year on woot. Not even over done in the slightest. You don't like Phoenix designs, fine, but they are not over done. Birds are over done, Trees are over done, Cute little people are overdone, Talking Food is over done, Skulls are over done, and Fish are overdone, but there haven't been that many Phoenix designs.

I agree. It is a cool design, looks great onscreen, maybe a nice wallpaper for my desktop (in fact that might look really cool), but as far as on my clothes I don't like it. Shirts with nothing in the upper half of the shirt has never appealed to me.

Apparently it has come to my attention that the Phoenix shirt is not as cemented as I previously thought...somehow. But still, more power to the Mickey shirt. I think it's better than the phoenix shirt and this shirt combined.
