Re: Red Giant, White Dwarf.

An explanation of the design!! Yayy!

Red Giant and White Dwarf are enjoying a game of marbles. To further explain how this fits the space theme, Red Giants and White Dwarves are both star stages, and the "red giant" and "white dwarf" are playing marbles with our planets. Pluto is out of the marble ring because it was revoked of "planet status".

Credit goes to my rather clever boyfriend for coming up with the "Red Giant, White Dwarf" idea.

I hope this one is able to print. I really, really do. : )

I would have also accepted: It's a loose reference to Red Dwarf. >..<

I think a couple people mentioned that when this was up for the last derby, but I've never heard of that show before. It seems really weird from what little I've read and seen of it since it was mentioned. British humor can be totally hit or miss for me.

Very loose. Red Dwarf featured a snooker game involving planets, but I'm not sure about the marbles ...

What in the world is Snooker? :O

Re: Red Giant, White Dwarf.

I love science based shirts, but I can't figure this one out so maybe someone can explain. I know what a red giant and a white dwarf are, but what do either of these things have to do with our solar system? And where is our sun, which isn't a red giant or white dwarf? And why would they be playing marbles with our planets? The whole thing makes no sense, in fact I think it's kind of pointless given that there's no connection holding any of it together. I prefer the one in this derby with our sun playing marbles with the planets, at least those things are related somehow. This is a highly overrated shirt in my opinion, unless I'm just missing the connection.

The theme of the derby was "Outer Space" first of all; it wasn't just limited to our solar system. I understand your concerns, but seriously the shirt wasn't meant to be spot on scientific. It was just a play on words, and had I put any other planets besides easily recognizable ones, people would've surely said "What's going on here...are those planets or marbles?" rather than "Oh hey those are our planets and I get the joke a little better now". If it bothers you too much that the sun is not present, perhaps I'll just tell you that he is off getting ice cream somewhere and decided to let his friends play with his marbles (i.e. our planets).

Besides, a lot of people that stopped by my shirt's page for the Space derby had no idea what White Dwarves and Red Giants were in regards to space-related things anyways, so...had it been truly accurate regarding the science behind it, it would've no doubt just gone wayyyyy over a lot of people's heads. Plus, with joke shirts, sometimes it's just best to keep it simple, rather than completely accurate at times.

My general feeling of it was that ultimately the universe is a big web of gravity. Everything is going to be pulling everything else in different directions. If you want to take the Red Giant and White Dwarf thing in to a scene to account for why our sun is not there, then how about our sun? Well it is much smaller than a red giant and much cooler than a white dwarf. Maybe they are bullies and ran him off?

Hah! :p During the derby I submitted this shirt, someone actually linked yours. I haven't been here long so I hadn't ever seen it before, and I'm surprised to see we're both now in a derby together, because I had no idea how long it had been since your shirt was in a derby!

I guess my problem boils down to this is two different good concepts merged into one that doesn't make much sense and requires a lot of explanation and storytelling (i.e. the sun went for ice cream). I think a shirt with just literal translations of space objects would be awesome. A shirt with the sun playing marbles with the planets is fine. Merging the two together is just random. It's like having a joke about black holes on the same shirt with a joke about how the moon is made of cheese. I just don't see the connection. Personally I would prefer to see the marbles left off and just add more funny literal translations of space objects.

I am going to go ahead and bring up the argument that every space-related show brings forth then, explosions in space. Like...I watch Star Trek, and quite often there is one thing or another that blows up in the middle of space, but of course in real life that wouldn't happen, as space lacks surrounding oxygen to fuel the fires and the explosion. Here you have the classic argument of what works in reality versus what looks cooler. Regarding my shirt, I had to make a decision on what would make a better, simpler joke and could include more characters to make it visually interesting, versus what is scientifically correct.

So...just because I know explosions in space look and sound nothing like on television shows, that doesn't mean that I can't appreciate it's visual appeal or the fact that without the sounds it'd be a rather uneventful scene. I'm not going to boycott the space shows because of their scientific inaccuracies, so I would hope that you wouldn't hate my shirt because it doesn't completely adhere to scientific properties.

Love the design and the concept; well executed. But as for me wearing it, I'm not sure; mainly due to the color contrast of having a large pink object on a blue backdrop. I don't know if I could pull this off as a dude.

I'm glad you like the design!

As for your concerns, it's not pink actually, it's red. Maybe you need to adjust your monitor. Plus, if it's called "Red Giant, White Dwarf" why in the hell would I make the giant pink?

I wouldn't call it "red", per se. Maybe a rosy red or a deep pink. The belly is pink.

I'm not sure you're reading what I wrote. I'm not talking about scientific properties or explosions. You have two different concepts fighting for meaning on your shirt, and neither of them relate to the other. Either one by themselves would be good, but put together the entire idea behind the shirt becomes cluttered and not very well thought out. I think you did a good job with all the elements, but put together the meaning becomes muddled in my opinion.

IMO this shirt is underrated. It needs more votes. I want this badly. I know it's "cute" which is frowned upon here at Woot, but the design is very clever. vote for bink!

At this point, I think we're just talking ourselves in circles; you think I didn't read what you wrote, while I did, and I think you completely missed the entire point behind me bringing up explosions in space. I haven't managed to completely convey to you the lightheartedness of the shirt, and you would prefer a more literal shirt, so perhaps we should just stop having this conversation.

I acknowledge that you think my shirt in its entirety is not well thought out, and you wouldn't buy it. I have noted your thoughts on it being "cluttered", although I humbly disagree, and we can leave it at that.

Maybe you could take all this negative energy and turn it into some positive compliments for Shigwarm here, since his shirt seems to fit more of what you're looking for anyways.

Hi RebellionCH! First of all - thanks for the wonderful compliments!

For this one I sketched it out on paper, drew the outlines in Macromedia Flash, and then colored it in Adobe Photoshop. Flash has a tendency to help smooth lines and make them cleaner. When I try and ink things in Photoshop it takes more time and usually ends up less sharp. :p

Jasssssneko! :p I color in Photoshop mainly because I don't normally do t-shirt designs, thus I became accustomed to using all of the great tools Photoshop had to offer that Flash just doesn't do. I still use Photoshop to color mainly out of familiarity, plus sometimes I like to use different brushes and tools that I only have available in Photoshop and not Flash (like for a grunge effect or something). Another reason is I don't like how flash erases (it always erases more than I want it to), and Photoshop offers more control and precision for me when it comes to coloring.

And I think we already talked about this a while back, but the reason I stick with Flash for the outline instead of just doing it all in Photoshop, is because when I try and ink things in Photoshop it looks like I was riding down the highway over a thousand speedbumps while doing it. :D

Hmmm.. interesting! You are right about the control for coloring. I guess I like the ease of sizing with vectors, so usually ready my designs pantone/printready-wise in illustrator after flash and only the comp gets made in photoshop.
But perhap's I shall experiment with coloring in photoshop sometime, if the mood hits!
And yup, I remember (and agree) with the shaky thing that happens in photoshop when inking!
Thanks for the reply=)
