Well you saw I said it was a joke

I think playing a video game on a shirt isn't in the spirit of what they meant by No Video Game References. (example it isn't Pac-Man at the park) So it seems on theme to me and probably my favorite design so far.

And I agree with this person agreeing with the other person. I thought the same but didn't want to bring it up but I do think the bottom line is unnecessary and maybe a bit anti-climatic after seeing the picture and laughing. But regardless, its still fantastic and I imagine it will make it.

I was really torn on whether to add the bottom line or not. Could have used some opinions on that, but there wasn't any time after I stayed up all night to finish it. If it's not your thing, well, the type is small so most people passing by won't get a chance to read it anyways.

Re: Thanks Dad. This is great!

My problem with the bottom text is that the jokes don't complement each other in tone or really in subject matter. To me they are contradictory ideas. The upper part of the design is joking about how the stupid kid can't put his gameboy down long enough to notice the beauty but the bottom text is more that the great outdoors suck and really aren't what they are cracked up to be.

It's only really a small issue and it wouldn't stop me from buying but something to think about in the future I guess.

billratio wrote:no video games

I think we all know what the rule means. It means no referencing to videogames as in Zelda, Halo, Tetris etc. Not "videogames" as in the act of playing. I think its tough because the word "videogame" means two things. Check the analogy.

Television is to Videogames as TV Shows are to Videogames.

If the rule was for TV it would make more sense because it would say "No TV Show references" which doesn't mean you can't have a TV set in your design. Likewise if the rule was to stop the use of famous literary works, it wouldn't mean that having a blank book on the shelf would be breaking the rules. It just means don't rip off a famous story.

The rule is there to stop the use of videogame characters, environments and such where you say "OH WOW! I LOVE MARIO TOO! +1"

BUT if the rule means that there can't be an empty unlabeled arcade cabinet in the background or original fictional characters can't even play games "allegedly" even though its not on a specific device and refers to no "videogame", well then prove he's not watching a movie.

This is a fantastic shirt, I would be really upset if it didn't make the cut. And I don't understand why people don't like the text. Personally, the text is what makes it so funny to me. "Look son, a tree!"

Re:

This looks really nice and is funny for a quick second, but on the other hand - it's dissing national parks. There aren't enough parks and protected areas as it is, and people who would wear this shirt would be advertising that national parks are boring and overrated

I believe that people are talking more about the "fun vacations are overrated" part. It's easily implied without the text. And frankly, WITH the text its kindof a middle finger to national parks.

kinda makes it lose the magic of what a tshirt graphic should do.

lost my vote.

mwesson

Re: Thanks Dad. This is great!

Yep. REALLY needs to lose the lower line of text. Shirt completely loses its meaning.

Without it, a very funny and buyable shirt.
With it - not so much - what are you trying to say? (As a previous poster says - it gives the middle finger to national parks)

mdexb2

quality posts: 0 Private Messages mdexb2

Ah, I understand. People who don't like the text are sympathizing with the dad and not the kid. I suspected as much, but I wasn't sure. The point of the shirt is to say that national parks are boring. Whether you agree with the message or not, that is the point, and I think it is done very well.

sarahbau

quality posts: 1 Private Messages sarahbau

As others, I would vote if it didn't have the text. I've always loved national parks, even when I was a kid. Without the text, people could empathize with either the kid or the dad. With the text, it appeals only to those who would empathize with the kid. I empathize with the dad, so unfortunately I wouldn't buy the shirt because of the text.

Re: Thanks Dad. This is great!

I love the image of this shirt..but there's one thing that keeps me from voting: the depiction of just a son. This makes it a very male-centric tee, something I'd definately buy for my boyfriend, but not for myself. If there was also a girl, and the shirt said "Look kids, a tree!", it would be freakin perfect. I really like it, but not for myself.

Still tho, applause! I keep seeing this guy bobb in and out of the fog. I hope it stays there....

Re: Thanks Dad. This is great!

If you decide not to vote for this because of the bottom text, well then, I say - not fair. That's only like 10% of the shirt. Not even that much really. It's just a tiny silver at the bottom. I like simple numbers tho, so lets go with that.

If that's how you feel, it means that you DO like 90% of the shirt. Isn't 90% pretty good? If I brought this home from school it'd have an A on it, and I'd think I deserved a treat. And by treat I mean vote. So gimmie.

Now that that's out of the way, it is from that point of view of the kid. I've never been a Dad, so I couldn't do that one, but I do know a lot of kids who would rather go to the amusement park than the national park. I don't think those kids are sticking their middle fingers up at nature, they're just not to the point where they appreciate it. One day they will, and then they'll look back and remember when they were younger and dumber and didn't pay attention to the things that really mattered. And they'll laugh at how silly they were, just like this shirt does.

I'm not trying to say it isn't a good design, and if this were for a grade, I'd give it an A, or if it were a "this is good" vote, then I would vote for it. However, the vote is for if I would want to buy one or not, and as much as I like the design, I have to say that I would not buy it, so I can't vote for it. Similarly, I would not vote for a cool physics shirt if it said "physics is boring" or something like that on it.

I don't mean to offend you by not voting on it. It it a good design. It's just that the text makes it something I would not wear.

Not quite - while one may like 90% of the design, that errant 10% pushes the message from a more lighthearted joke to a place too far that is really down on national parks.

It seems many people who DO find national parks worthwhile places wouldn't want to wear that message. Considering how far this design has come in the derby, that number is frighteningly low in fact.

Seems to me that if you don't see a joke in this one of 2 things must be true.

1. You are too old to remember being a kid.
2. Your parents never took you on educational trips.

Why wouldn't this be pro-parks? Everyone knows that things a child might not enjoy at the moment can turn out to be good for them in the long run. I'm still not seeing why this is would be so horribly offensive to the park lovers. Especially since it is about something that's happening there all the time!

Of course the joke is obvious. However, if it just had the graphic, it would have been funny in a'haha,so true' or
'haha I remember that' or 'haha that was me and my kids' kind of design. The graphic is enough.

With the top dad text, it becomes more obvious that the design is saying parks are cancellation (instead of just seeing the contrast between the enthusiasm of the dad and the boredom of the kid).

With the top text AND the bottom text, the message is being forced/hammered. The shirt is definitely saying parks are boring.

Even if it has nothing to do with pro-parks/anti-parks, you could view it from a design standpoint of what is enough to get across a funny idea, to what is unnecessary - or in this case, too much. Here, less would have been way more. Something to keep in mind for future designs, as this is a good design, just overboard on the text/message.

That's some fine pandering there Jewel. Keep up the good work.

As for all you Nature Bobs out there worried about the "message" of this shirt, calm down. I understand if you aren't a fan of the design, but don't act like this is an anti-park shirt, and if you wear it you must want to Pave the Bay. I love National Parks and visit them on a regular basis, and I'd rock the hell out of this shirt! I'd rock it in the Everglades. I'd rock it at Big Sur. I'd even rock it to Glacier after all the glaciers are gone (what do they have like 3 left). Text good, shirt great! Keep doing your thing Miss Wing

I live right next to a national park and if someone tells me there's lots of stuff to do here and then says to go hiking one more time... I swear...

Is there any chance this will get made whether it is here or anywhere else? This is the only Woot shirt where I wouldn't have hesitated to click the "I Want One" button despite owning too many t-shirts. I'm still thinking about this shirt a week after the other shirts have won... please sell it!!!
