This is just awesome. I'm an art historian and I grew up on TMNT (the orignal...both the Eastman and Laird books and the old school cartoon), so this one just strikes a chord with me.

As I'm sure this week's daily shirt did as well?

Sorry, I understand the concept is slightly different, but for me, this one just comes far too soon on the heels of the other TMNT/Classic Art mash-up (which many already accused of being a retread of a Threadless print.)

Well, threadcrapping or not, I also think Woot is going to view this as "too similar to a shirt we've already printed". We'll see what happens, but based on past rejections, this one's going to have a tough time avoiding the red ink.

Let the voters decide, personally I think it's a cute design. As to how similar it is to that other shirt, well that one went for realistic - this is toony, that had the original artists with the individual turtle colors added on while this is a reinvention of a work of art made by one of those said artsits... how is that too close? The only are they both tread is referencing TMNT, it's nowhere on the level you're inferring. And the whole threadless similarity the other shirt carried didn't stop people from buying that, I doubt another TMNT reference will stop them from voting on this.

Plus, some folks might prefer the background color to the pale tone that other design used.

I'm certainly not trying to claim that in this case, the shirts are too similar (or to "crap" on anyone's thread, as another user so crudely put it.) The point I was attempting to make is that this design suffers from a case of poor timing. With another TMNT parody tee already printed this week, I can't help but feel this entry comes "too soon". Granted, these circumstances are beyond the artist's control, but personally, I feel the joke has already gotten stale.

My problem isn't with its resemblance to anything else--it's with its use of a title-that-isn't. The statue's title, I'm pretty sure, is just David, so making the joke has made the shirt off-topic.

True, it also brings up the point that I don't think this joke makes very much sense. I do get the TMNT reference, but why would there be a Michelangelo bandana on David?

It comes off to me as grasping for straws.

No bandana here, it's a mask! If the teenage mutant ninja turtle Michelangelo would make a replica sculpture of David, this is how it would look like, with nunchucks, mask, and all, sort of a personal flair from its creator.

Agreed. I'd like to see it get rejected as off-topic, but Woot is ... inconsistent in it's enforcement of topic.

You don't see why some of us have a problem with this shirt coming so closely on the heels of another daily (that sold out) that is strikingly in the same vein? I am not saying that you stole the idea at all. I don't know if you did. But at the very least, you must admit that there are striking similarities and you unfortunately have a poorly timed submission.

Will you please list the 'striking' similarities and the differences between the "daily" you speak of and mine?

Both play on the fact that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were named after famous artists. Both use the turtles' headband in the colors of the turtle that whose name matches the eponymous artist. Those two things seem pretty striking to me. Again, I'm not saying you stole the idea, although you might have; I'm saying it's poor timing. And it's your job to list the differences in defense of yourself. Are the shirts the same? No. Do they play on the exact same idea in the exact same way? Yes.

And aside from all of that, this shirt is off-theme. You didn't reinterpret "David"; you drew "David" and made a parody of it by making the aforementioned joke.

I think its a cute shirt (i especially love the little turtle at the bottom) but i do agree it has came out really close timing to that other shirt. That was actually the first thing i thought when i saw the thumbnail, thus why i clicked on it. But i do love the little turtle!!

You've only given me 2 similarities, and even the second one is tenuous. The aesthetic differences between mine and the "daily" can easily overwhelm your meager 1.5 similarities. There's no need to list them to defend myself because it is clear that you know and have stated that:

It is pointless to argue off/on-topicness. Let Woot be the judicator of such matter, and I will be fine with their decision.

Regardless of the daily that was printed, this isn't an original idea to begin with. If people are concerned with originality, it shouldn't be with the daily but rather the exhausted theme in the first place.

This is what's gonna happen: I say my arguments, then you say yours, then I say mine again maybe reiterating on some points, and you do the same, then other people say theirs, and then i say mine again. It's a never ending loop that wastes time and comment space. Just look how long it took you to realize that mine and the "daily" are two different shirts. Unless you have the power to conclude this matter, i.e. reject my entry, then once again I say, it's pointless to argue on/off topicness.

CAFM. Any minute now, I expect someone to start claiming that printing anything on any shirt is a tired concept that has been done to death.

It GMV as there can never be too many good and different TMNJ interpretations, and I've never seen any version of this before, no matter what excuse to complain anyone may invent.
