"After the derby theme was announced, it was all I could do to get the image of a lotus out of my head. Then I began pondering the imagery of India's sacred flower -- of the petals opening upwards and the roots digging downwards -- and I got stuck on a concept in my head. And that was that. The simple, unadorned roots anchor the lotus to the earth while the petals open above. A metaphor? Sure, why not."

A bit later than I wanted to submit it, but still: my second submission ever! Advice and comments are greatly appreciated. -:] Thanks!

Wow! Really nice line work and the color choice makes the lotus pop! Only thing I can say is maybe a little smaller and lower on the shirt... Still GMV though!

This is just plain lovely. I can't tell you how over asphalt I am, but people keep designing great shirts on it. Me so sad. Me so happy! Me confused.

This is really well put together. Might agree that it could be a bit too high on the tee, but either than that, nice work!!

I love this design. I think it is centered perfectly. Unique and not like any other. Good work, Kaede.

This is great. I love the way is put together and how it turned some generic figures into something unique and eye appealing.

I love this! Pink is my favorite color and this just just beautiful on top of that! And the placement wouldn't be bad if it were moved down but I like it where it is now.

@fungusamongus/chunkydesign: I agree about the design being a bit high, actually. For anatomical purposes, I was worried that the lotus would end up too low on a person's chest, and (for women, at least) it would ride below the bust awkwardly; but, I think I overcompensated a bit much. Also, when I placed it on the template, I didn't see the edge of the collar. It's a good lesson learned for my future designs. Thanks, big time, for the feedback! -:]

@paigeg: I'm ... mildly obsessed with the Asphalt color. It's the "richest" gray shirt I've ever seen, and I love it for that. -x] Thanks for the vote, though! Worst comes to worst, we can always form the "Asphalt Gang" and go raiding local eateries in our awesome Woot shirts. -:D

My brother actually wanted me to print it on Creme (same colors as above). Would anyone have been as interested? (Just curious. For feedback purposes.)

The bold, powerful splash of color and the strong symbolism makes this a pink design that guys could actually wear. Very impressive! :^)

I really appreciate that. From the start, I was worried that the colors would lean too feminine and it wouldn't be something guys could comfortably wear. But knowing there's at least one guy out there who's saying, "Let's do this!" to the pink ... it made my morning. -;] Thanks!

This is a really nice clean design. I do seem to notice a seventh color in this though, a darker grey in the line fill between the two gradients on the vine, checked it in photoshop and it is darker then the shirt and not just an optical illusion :S Other then that though great job

I think that's supposed to be the shirt color. Probably used the Woot-provided Pantone color and then slapped it on the Photoshop template which is slightly different. Just a guess.

Oh ... crumb! You're right. I didn't notice my mistake until you pointed it out. Yes, that line is meant to be the same as the t-shirt color; it is, in fact, the Pantone they provide. On my computer, it looks so dag-nabbit similar that I didn't see the difference.

@cmdixon2: You are correct. I pulled my design from Illustrator into Photoshop; then I color-droppered the background color from the t-shirt template. I didn't mean to mislead anyone, though. P.S.: I think the placement is good (brings the pop of color right on top of the chest for guys, and not awkwardly on the bust for girls).

I think the colors are perfect, too. I think if the pink were any less bold it would look a little frilly - and the combination of the hot pinks and dark grays makes it wearable by both genders. This same design on a cream shirt would still look nice, but I personally wouldn't be as inclined to wear it.

Also, I think the stem adds a nice asymmetrical touch to what would otherwise be a very standard, symmetrical sunrise/flower/rainbow shape.

@tjost: That's a relief. I'm a stickler for following the rules, so I'm glad they were gentle with me. -:] It's just one more thing I know to be careful of in the future.

@r4wrm0nster: I appreciate the different opinion! To be frank, before the root was incorporated, I seriously considered putting forth just the lotus and the "henna" semi-circle (which, originally, was beneath the flower). I went on ahead with the root for two reasons: because I was stuck on the "above/below" concept in my mind, and because I thought the design looked top-heavy on a t-shirt without something to elongate it down a person's frame. I was worried that it would end up looking like a huge, henna baby-bib otherwise. -x] On second thought, maybe that would have been cool ... -;O

@benrefling: Yeah! Rock that dude-pink! -:D Thanks for the detailed afterthoughts, too. I dig the extra feedback. -:] I liked the Cream in it's own right. It was a reversal of the above, in that it made the black more striking and the lotus softer. But it did lean more feminine, and I wanted to keep it as unisex as possible.


Thanks to everyone for their votes and their comments. This has already wildly exceeded my expectations. To be in the fog with these other great designers is incredible. I don't know what else to say, except that I'm going downstairs to enjoy the most satisfying cup of celebratory coffee I've had in a long time. -;]

I love this design!! I have been on a shirt.woot fast since mid-december. If this shirt wins, I am going to break that fast. I love everything about it. Shirt color, design color, placement. Good luck, I really hope to see this for sale!

I too am really disappointed. This is the first design in a long time that I have REALLY wanted. Stayed up 3 nights waiting to buy it. I hope to see it again in one of the 2nd chance derbies?
