Re: I Will Not Blend
I was thinking about woodland animals and they all seem to be the same kind of color. Except for one, and he's not even going to bother to try and blend in. When you're awesome, you might as well accept it.

I quite obviously need to vote for this one. Looks great!
Re: I Will Not Blend
The void on that beautiful paint effect is quite stunning.
I always feel humbled by your artistic skills, darn it. ^_^
Re: I Will Not Blend
Yes, those painterly effects are mega-gorgeous.
Re: I Will Not Blend
Wow! I always enjoy your work, but this one is just stunning. I really think you've outdone yourself with this one, with the composition and style. My favorite of yours by far!
Any chance of us getting a higher resolution close up?
Re: I Will Not Blend
Somehow, I feel like this will be my favorite throughout the derby. I don't think anything will top it.
The concept is awesome, the execution is spot on, and the line work on the fox makes me think scroll-painting meets storybook. Excellent, Jewel! I'm still bewildered by the awesome half-toning. If you ever take apprentices..
Re: I Will Not Blend
Wow - Thank you SO much! I'm glad you all like it.
The painterly parts aren't too hard to do. I use watercolors and let them make the shapes they want to make, scan them in and then use them as backgrounds in the designs. The shading is all there already from the paint so it's all one layer of halftones. Just to be safe I make them a little bit bigger than the smallest that's allowed.
Here's a closeup of the shading:

Re: I Will Not Blend
This is absolutely gorgeous. I think it's the best thing you've done EVER.
Re: I Will Not Blend
very striking. +1 =)

HAHA! My owls are all huddled in the corner, WEEPING.
j/k. Thanks, Boots.
Re: I Will Not Blend
Great painterly effects contrasting with the line work jewelwing. You took all the elements of the pre-derby version and tied them together beautifully. +1

WOW I like it

So THAT's how you get the lovely watercolor effect I've wondered about in many of your designs - by using real watercolors!
Beautiful... I especially love the forest and animals in the back, I thought I saw someone post this earlier somewhere, but that part is nice enough to have its own shirt.
Re: I Will Not Blend
Really beautiful design! Unfortunately, the same basic idea has been printed over at Threadless before:

Someone pointed that out to me this morning after I'd already finished mine. I'd never seen that design before and I feel like mine is different enough to pass the test.
Sure it's some trees, some animals and a fox, but they're done in very different styles. I don't think visually they're that similar.
The idea behind the Threadless version is based on b&w animals, not woodland animals, and the fox is in the trees, with an "on no! you got caught" look. Mine doesn't care about the color of the animals, just that they can hide in a forrest. And my fox isn't trying to hide, he's proud to be out in the open. Mine is about being an individual and standing out. Seemed like enough of a difference to me, that's why I choose to enter it.
Re: I Will Not Blend
I guess this will win.

Stop saying that! You did that last week and it didn't even end in the fog. Jinx....
Re: I Will Not Blend

You may be thinking of Jewelwing's entry in last week's derby. Similar trees, but not the same ones.
Re: I Will Not Blend
Really nice +1
Re: I Will Not Blend
yes, but, will it translate?....oh, I guess not...
Great shirt!

Re: I Will Not Blend
wow, beautiful picture!
Re: I Will Not Blend
I love the way this looks, but for the record, I wish I could get more of your owls on shirts! ![]()
Re: I Will Not Blend
If I could give this 3 votes I would! Just beautiful...
Re: I Will Not Blend
I really, really like the concept!
The sketchiness of the trees and the snow-white t-shirt are beautiful, i would vote but i can't cause i haven't bought anything yet.
Hope you win!(without my help though.)
Keep up the good work! :-D
Re: I Will Not Blend
I really like the design and the concept, but I was wondering if anyone else thought that the fox looked a bit sheepish? I just didn't get the impression that he was proud to be awesome from his posture and face. To me, it sort of looks like he is slinking away from the black and white woods in shame.
rinibird wrote:I love the way this looks, but for the record, I wish I could get more of your owls on shirts!
Thanks! Expect another owl shirt soon. It's in the works now.

and one could say that that shirt was taken from bev Doolittle's "woodland encounter"
toby8915 wrote:and one could say that that shirt was taken from bev Doolittle's "woodland encounter"
okay, the point of be doolittle's design is to draw the viewers eye to the fox, because its red against white so that one would not notice the hidden indians in the foreground. she does opitcal hidden illusions in her work. she didnt have some commentary on the fox not fitting in.
just because someone else does a fox against a white woodland does not mean it was taken from anywhere, it means they had the same idea, but they executed it very differently. i think this submission is beautiful, just like bev dolittles, just in a different way.
This is a beautiful shirt and I really love the design, but it's black ink on a white shirt. Fades way too fast for me to make a purchase if it does print.
Re: I Will Not Blend
You will if you want to eat one of those small animals back there...
LOVE the water colory style!
Re: I Will Not Blend
I just love everything about this shirt. I especially liked that she chose white for the shirt color. Wouldn't have looked as good on any other color. If it seems to fade... well I will just wear it all I can... ha ha!! Maybe I will buy 2... hey, that's is actually a pretty good idea... ;)
Re: I Will Not Blend
Nice concept and I like the texture and depth of the background. Very nice!

Why are there certain people that seem to take a perverse joy in showing work by other artists and accusing the artist of stealing their concept? While I understand there have been some "artists" on this site (who will remain nameless) who have done this blatantly, those artists have a history of doing so and do it almost every week.
On the other hand, Jewelwing's work has always been highly original, and unlike those other artists, she puts a tremendous amount of effort into each and every entry. Just because other people have conceptualized an idea with a couple points of similarity doesn't mean Jewelwing stole her idea.
Please, let's give the artists that submit highly original work the benefit of the doubt in cases like this, and hold off on accusing them of stealing concepts until we see an actual pattern - which this is not.

No jinx! On u jewelwing...fox reminds me of reefcat...are we sad for him...;(
