Re: Forbidden Future
I was going to post in the idea thread that a new collab from you guys would be perfect here. I was not wrong!! Great reference, and very well executed. Good luck guys! +1!
Re: Forbidden Future
Awesome, awesome, awesome.
Re: Forbidden Future
i worked on the four futurama feature dvd's that came out a while ago and a lot of my co workers worked on the original series...i would love to have this shirt to show off to them. I love how you rendered bender (hehe that rhymed) and of course leela is as hot as ever. nice job you two! this better print or ill throw a fit, you hear me wooters?
Re: Forbidden Future
AMAZING!!! +2.......oh wait...
Re: Forbidden Future
Brilliant work! :^)
Re: Forbidden Future
futurama is one of my favorites
nice job!
Re: Forbidden Future
A match made in the stars... ok enough with the cheese. Great team up. Forbidden Planet is one of my FAVS and so is Futurama.
And it's a great illustration. Maybe you guys can do prints too... I'd be down for that.
Re: Forbidden Future
WOW! It's like the dream team! +1
Re: Forbidden Future
How is a design based on a contemporary cartoon on theme?
Looks great, but this just doesn't mesh with the theme. As always though, the rejectionator won't be worried about silly things like theme.

My friend was wondering about that too but I believe this picture is parodying The Creature From the Black Lagoon poster(1954). So I think that'd make it on topic.

Close! As Grrrlmarvel pointed out, it's Forbidden Planet.

rglee129 wrote:Close! As Grrrlmarvel pointed out, it's Forbidden Planet.
LOL I thought there was a robot version of the pose I was missing, I just couldn't remember the title for the movie. =D
Re: Forbidden Future
But where is the Futurama parody? As of right now I just see two copyrighted characters (from a litigious creator) drawn in a different style.
Woot's rolling the dice if it allows this one, and would make me wonder why they ever make rules with threats.
Re: Forbidden Future
While I typically cringe at the "mashups" on the other T sites, this is inspired!
And Forbidden planet is 100% on theme, paranoid androids!
I weep for the future of this entry.
Re: Forbidden Future
I love love love Robbie-Kasey collabs, but honestly I'd like this alot better without the Futurama reference.
And it's not that I don't like Futurama either, because I do.

Actually, the characters look quite a bit different from the official Futurama designs, so it should be fine. The characters you see on the shirt are inspired by the real ones, but their looks are very different.
Copyright comes into play when you use the real designs themselves, or do not make significant changes to the designs. The robot and woman are in a completely different style from the cartoon. It actually took me a moment to figure out the reference. At first I was like "Whuu, the girl looks like she only has one eye! Wait a second....I see what you did there..." :P
To me, this is a very good example of parody. I could be wrong, but I see nothing at all that would mark this for rejection. TGentry did a great Family Guy reference sometime back that was a good parody. The character reference was recognizable, but it wasn't the exact character.
Re: Forbidden Future
Nice! I kinda hope this one wins the whole enchilada :>
Re: Forbidden Future
Great collaboration! Talk about a great match in styles... the best of bots with the best of pinups, what more could you ask for?!
Awesome, simply pure squeezed awesomeness.
Re: Forbidden Future
Clever and well done! Though, I think it's kinda "cheating" to put modern pop culture references in designs for this derby. Of course, if woot agreed, they'd have a "no pop culture" rule...so I guess it's fine. Regardless, I'd buy it, even with my aversion to pop culture shirts.

WOW, totally awesome!!!

I hope you're right. I instantly saw "Bender", took me a longer on "Leela". Tgentry's griffin was far less recognizable.
Also....Robby the robot....how appropriate.
Re: Forbidden Future
This is so great! Especially since I was just thinking of how this shirt would have fit in really well with this week's theme. Awesome job guys! You work great together![]()
Re: Forbidden Future
That is awesomely epic! +1
Re: Forbidden Future
amazing work guys!
Re: Forbidden Future
It would be an absolute shame if this shirt doesn't print. There is a lot of great art coming out on this derby, as usual and I'm haven't ever really felt compelled to comment before BUT no one has been more dead on theme and as creative as this. Win or not this is hands down the best shirt design I have seen on this site yet. If every derby had entries that captured the themes as well as this I would be buying shirts far more often.
Re: Forbidden Future
Totally awesome! great work guys!
Re: Forbidden Future
Awesome team up again, you guys! :D
Re: Forbidden Future
I must buy this!!! So glad it fogged. Not only is it great artwork, but there is a story to go along with it. Obviously, the Planet Express spaceship crashed and Leela got knocked unconscious. Bender is saving her from the ship, thus creating that iconic pose. Brilliant!

There is no way that is possible, Bender would never save Leela. He's obviously kidnapping her to ransom back to Farnsworth. In fact, he probably sabotaged the ship in the first place!
Re: Forbidden Future
I sure hope the "working hours" rejectionator allows this to proceed. I'd hate to have to offer my "services" to get it passed, but I will.
Re: Forbidden Future
this is frickin' sweet on so many levels! art and concept are solid! well done! gmv
Re: Forbidden Future
This could never happen. Leela can take care of herself! She'd probably be the one carrying Bender to safety. lol
IN! SANE! This collab is perfection.
roofoo wrote:This could never happen. Leela can take care of herself! She'd probably be the one carrying Bender to safety. lol
lol, also true!
roofoo wrote:This could never happen. Leela can take care of herself! She'd probably be the one carrying Bender to safety. lol
True, except when she gets stung by intergalactic space bees! So clearly there is an unseen player afoot here causing mayhem.
As much as I love this design, is it me, or is his left (our right) leg longer than the other?
Re: Forbidden Future
I agree with Futurama ![]()

Then why didn't the same apply to this one?
thegambler311 wrote:Then why didn't the same apply to this one?
The faces of the characters in that shirt look almost identical (albeit a little less cleanly rendered) to the real Simpsons characters. There is no mistaking who the characters are due to the design of them being so similar to the official images. In Robbie and Kasey's shirt above, the designs of the robot and woman are significantly different from the official Futurama characters. There is a reference and similarity, but they do not look exactly like the cartoon art like in the example you've linked to.
DianaSprinkle wrote:My friend was wondering about that too but I believe this picture is parodying The Creature From the Black Lagoon poster(1954). So I think that'd make it on topic.
or one of a bazillion classic monster movies where a girl is carried off by a big scary thing
Re: Forbidden Future
Sweetness! I really like this one. : ) +1
Re: Forbidden Future
I'm in awe of the detail. The first time I saw it I was like "that robot kind of looks like Bender" and thought it sort of took away from the monster movie style but as soon as I saw the one eye and realized that it was all on purpose, it made the design great! This is a perfect example of how to reference something without tempting the rejectionator!
Re: Forbidden Future
Why does Leela have hot pants on?
Re: Forbidden Future
Robbie, man...you win. I really hope this prints. I have a giant Forbidden Planet poster on my wall; such a great film.

Hot Pants derby anyone?...
tgentry wrote:Hot Pants derby anyone?...
I shudder at the potential outcome of this....(e.g. people of WalMart)
tgentry wrote:Hot Pants derby anyone?...
Only if Star Wars is allowed. I definitely think it's time for Hot Pants Vader.
Re: Forbidden Future
This is so well done
Re: Forbidden Future
Wicked Awesome. Must Print!!!!!!!
Re: Forbidden Future
Here's hoping no one gets sued over this... it looks amazing.

This is just too awesome not to print. Very good job. *crosses fingers*
Thanks to everybody for your awesome feedback on the design!! And mega thanks to Robbie for coming to me with this idea. It is a privilege to work with him.

Right on, Kasey- thanks for all the great comments, everyone!
And as soon as I had the idea, I knew the best design would be one in which I worked with Kasey. His knack for atmosphere and drawing women in that beautiful, classic style is amazing. Thanks, man!
Now I get to stay up to 1 a.m. for the next three nights to see if this prints...!
rglee129 wrote:Now I get to stay up to 1 a.m. for the next three nights to see if this prints...!
There is no if, only when (1,2 or 3).
Re: Forbidden Future
My internal monologue looking at this design:
"Wow, what a perfect illustration for this derby.
Kinda nice to have something in the fog that is just straight up good illustration and not cheesy cuteness or some pop culture reference.
The robot kinda looks like Bender, but oh well.
Why does she have purple hai--Ohhhhhh."
I still think it's well done, and I love both Forbidden Planet and Futurama, but I think I would have preferred the shirt without the Futurama reference. Subtle enough that I still like it though.
Re: Forbidden Future
I haven't really cared for the past durby themes so I haven't spent time here looking at the art. But this is just amazing!
I'm sad that I didn't check it out in time to vote.
I'm giving you two a voodoo magic + uno.
I'm hoping it works it's way into the talley and gives you an extra point.
Great work!
Re: Forbidden Future
I'd just like to point out that Leela's wristband thing is supposed to be on her right arm. Just super sayin' that's all.
How do I vote....?
Re: Forbidden Future
I really want this shirt. I'd rock it all the time!

In order to vote, one needs to have made at least one purchase at any woot site (shirt.woot, wine.woot, kids.woot, woot.com).
You could just buy this very design--which won second place in the derby and printed on Saturday, May 28th--HERE (<---that's a link to the purchasing page for this design's shirt print!), and you'll be able to vote in all future shirt.woot derbies!
