Barring the fact that this is an overly done, badly executed pop culture reference...

I'm not even sure what the joke is supposed to mean.

Oh, that's okay. It's a reference to "one-upmanship". It's a play on the term "one up" versus 1-up. A 1-up in Super Mario Brothers looks like a green and white capped mushroom. It gives an additional "life" or "guy". It adds one.

In conversational or competitive terms, to "one up" someone is to try to successfully outdo a competitor.

See this handy link for more information.

If you're going to make a Super Mario reference, do it RIGHT. I hafta agree.. this makes no sense.

Boy, y'all are really awful at complaining about ramy' designs. Where's all the righteous complaints? "oh, the light is clearly coming from above, yet, he has highlights on the front" where are those kind of cries?

-it's harder when he's actually done something reasonably cleverly double-reference-ish, though, isn't it?

hats off, mr ramy.

I got it immediately (and thought to myself "that's clever") but I'm not certain I would've understood the joke without the shirt title. Just my two cents.

I am still confused after reading comments. Why is it a green and red mushroom? I figure it has something to do with Mario, but I don't under how that compares 1-up to one-upping someone. The green mushroom gives you an extra life where as the red mushroom makes Mario bigger, right? Maybe it's just going over my head.

I'll help

"compares 1-up to one-upping"

Still need help?

compare 1-up to one-up

(my apologies if you were being sarcastic. Hard to tell in text)

love the design! I get it... its a 1up mushroom that is trying to one up the red mushroom. I think what the others are confused about is this: what exactly can the green mushroom do twice as fast? O_O

Yes. This.
That part of the joke is what makes no sense to me. I am genuinely curious about it.

I would SWEAR there were mushrooms that gave "2-ups" at one point in Mario's history, but I can't seem to find an image for the life of me...(no pun intended, really, I swear!)

Re: The One-Upper

I love the mushrooms and want the shirt, but the text is way too long and the art placement is bad.

If he just said "Anything you can do I can do better" that would have been an improvement instead of the multiple attempts at the joke of the submitted image. Also, "He likes me better." would just be adorable.

The mushrooms are very tiny and would either be covered up by shoulder straps (if someone wears a backpack) or a jacket, and they pretty much would end up right on the nipples from what I could tell, making it an awkward shirt to wear for female wooters.

Bigger, more centered, and further down the shirt with a more concise joke would make this probably one of my top 5 favorite woot shirts ever.

Re: The One-Upper

I'm not too quick to jump on a Ramy design, and this is clever... however, it really shouldn't have to be explained and it does have to be.

I can do "THAT"... what can he do?

The Green mushrooms give an extra life (1 up) but you're comparing the two here.

Why not just have them both talking. Red one says "I make him big" Green one says, "Oh yeah, well I give him an extra life".

Just like Adder said, poorly done pun with a decent concept...

Everyone I wear this around would ask me, "What can he do 2 times faster, with his eyes closed? He doesn't do anything faster, he just gives extra lives...."

Easiest derby theme in the world, and the shirt is still off. Yes, mushrooms are edible, yes Mario in all likelihood "eats" the mushrooms for power-ups. But the joke is not in the fact that the mushrooms are anthropomorphic. It's just a Mario reference. Which I'm aware is OK in this derby, so the design itself is technically valid, it's just Sirius GPP.

Re: The One-Upper

I can see how a purely visual joke of one-upmanship might have been better.

For instance if they were both courting a girl mushroom, and the red mushroom had a little flower, while the 1UP had a bunch of roses and some chocolates and a fur coat?

Essentially Cee-Lo's 'Forget you' in mushroom kindgom form. :-p

I tend to overcomplicate my designs though.

Actually this appears to be low angle side key light with high angle back fill light, which is explains how the light get get under the mushroom top and into their faces, while the light ring around their forms is indicative of a back light, there is not enough pool distortion for the angle to be very low.

Bam! light designed.

Its funny, but not my style, this whole derby isn't really, but you have my approval from a lighting perspective.

There are very FEW lighting complaints that can't be explained away by treating it from a film/theater point of view. Even if a light source was clearly depicted as part of the composition, one could still validly say that the shirt was lit that way. I mean, hell, it happens in movies all the time.

Re: The One-Upper

I think that the things that bother me about the design the most are two-fold.

First, as some one else pointed out, it would be funnier if the green shroom was saying "Oh yeah? Well I saved his life."

Second, and I've had this complaint before, occasionally Ramyb doesn't do a complete finish of the mouths on his characters, like there is on the one up mushroom here. Now, I don't think that it is "slipshod" I think that it's a style choice. I know that for many this makes it seem incomplete, but I think that he (Ramyb) does it because he, as the designer, prefers the way that they look.

I think that there are some people who also don't mind it, or think that in a subtle way it adds a cute factor. Personally, I don't like the choice here, as it just is distracting from the intended pun.

Lastly, and I'm really surprised that no one has mentioned this yet, but this shirt is a little too close to a bewb/boob shirt. I don't think that it is intentional, just that the placement of the mushrooms might be a bit awkward for women of the female persuasion.

Just tryin' to be a little funny while making a point. Some times at my job, I see those people where it's just best to err on the side of caution and not take "sides" as it were by saying "sir" or "ma'am" as you are likely to be wrong.

Anyways, the point being as a guy I can totally see a friend of mine, "Miller" we'll call him, hitting on a woman wearing this shirt by saying, "Hey, nice set of mushrooms you got there."

It's not that we're dullards.

It's just about as poorly executed as your standard "dad joke."

You know, the kind that is followed by "heh, GET IT?"

It's not the pun that kills it, we've seen a cheesy pun shirt before at woot with "Knock, Knock." I own that one and it is a fun little shirt that seems to get more comments then woot shirts that I own which people might consider more artsy or more pop culture.

That said, I'll mention again that mushrooms are badly placed. I think if those 'shrooms were cantalopes this shirt would be rejected out right for being a booby shirt.

Dads everywhere, and their two white horses falling in the mud, are crying that you'd equate them with this low-brow trash.

There is a very basic difference, in that here we have an exceedingly forced joke for the sole purpose of creating a mario shirt. Also, most dads probably don't have a recorded history of committing fraud, or supporting moms who do so even more blatantly. Dad jokes exist in a much purer realm.
