Re: The New Unicorn
I want this one, not for Halloween, but to wear to the shelter, where black cats always get adopted last - and we can't adopt them out in October.

That makes me sad. I have a beautiful long haired black cat. I found her three years ago at the beginning of October and didn't hesitate to take her in. In fact, I was worried some superstitious weirdos would take her in and do something horrible to her so now I never let her outside. Black cats have wonderful personalities, they are just misunderstood much like myself.
Re: The New Unicorn
This is adorable! I have two black cats and they are the sweetest little animals. The female, Izzy, is the best cat I've ever had. I hope this shirt wins. :D
Re: The New Unicorn
Awww, this is adorable. I always wanted a black cat, but I'm allergic.
GMV.
Re: The New Unicorn
@Nekkochan - I hoped it would be a year-round shirt! That's really sad to hear black cats get adopted last
I can understand it - my mom was similar about adopting a black cat - 'black cats are bad luck!' but it happened anyway, and now she admits the black kitty is the sweeetest - in fact much moreso than her tuxedo colored sister!
@kate1188 - ugh, it stinks to worry about things like that (I was concerned last halloween too and will be again soon!). And totally agreed - they are quite misunderstood!
@kboldebook - Thanks!=) My black cat is also the sweetest - so affectionate and very tolerant of people - as well as nice to her not so sweet-natured non-black bossy sister!
@yellowflower - Thanks! Awww that's too bad you're allergic
Coincidentally though, I remember reading that black cats contain the least amount of allergens so they're frequently adopted by people with allergies...(I'd imagine maybe the short-haired ones?) I don't know if that's a myth of not, but I've read it a few places!

We actually have a sign up at the shelter, 10 reasons to adopt a black cat - "black cats are very slimming" and so on. But it's the end of kitten season & we've got about 15 black kittens left, and about 3 in other colors.
Pretty sure that's a myth about the allergens. I'm not allergic to my black cat, but my niece is. Coat and color don't have anything to do with it - it's the cat's saliva you're allergic to, and your allergies can be very specific. I'm more allergic to Siamese for some reason. But your allergies can also change - I used to be very allergic to cats, and after I hit 30 it decreased substantially.
Re: The New Unicorn
I just rescued a black kitten from the pallets in front of Food Lion. We already have 2 black sisters you can't tell apart.
Nice shirt I just wish the cat looked happier!
Re: The New Unicorn
I'm British, and when I was growing up, black cats were always regarded as good luck. We had a black cat, and my friends would come over and pet her just before exams. Good luck cards often showed black cats and four leaf clovers.
Sadly, I think the superstition is changing, probably due to TV, and now they're starting to be regarded as unlucky instead. Which is a shame.
Re: The New Unicorn
This would definitely make an excellent year-round shirt. The sweetest cat I've ever met is a pure black old boy. It's sad that people are actually superstitious enough to avoid them. Makes me want to run out to a shelter and adopt a few black kitties. If only I could afford them...
Why is the cat sad?
roseweasley wrote:Why is the cat sad?
It's the "why doesn't everybody love us as much as we deserve? really, we're not bad luck... please adopt me..." face
Re: The New Unicorn
My dream cat as a child was an all black cat with yellow eyes. I've always seen them as lucky. The first cat that I actually owned me, and adopted me, was exactly that - all black with yellow eyes. He showed up on my front door. I've had 2 cats since then and 1 of them was also solid black. Love em! This shirt is an all year round design..gmv
Re: The New Unicorn
I guess I don't get it. I can't buy this, or vote for it, or anything? Just comment? Well, I like it. I might even buy it.

That's so sad...we had a black cat growing up and I've had my current black cat for 15 years (!).
As for the design, the cat is completely adorable. ![]()

You have to buy something from any of the woot sites before you can vote. As for buying it, that would happen if it places 1st, 2nd, or 3rd next weekend.

I bought something just so I could vote on this. I love it!
Re: The New Unicorn
I love this shirt! I hope it wins. I have two rescued black cats. Unfortunately I live in an area where people do horrible things to black cats... so I have a soft spot for them. And besides, my landlord thinks I only have one cat since only one can fit in the window at a time!
Re: The New Unicorn
I usually try to avoid buying black shirts, but I love black cats! The best cat I ever had was a black domestic longhair! She was awesome! YES, she came from the shelter!
Re: The New Unicorn
GMV, both because it's adorable for its own sake and because one of our cats is a sweet black shorthair--yes, from a shelter. ![]()
Nekkochan wrote:I want this one, not for Halloween, but to wear to the shelter, where black cats always get adopted last - and we can't adopt them out in October.
I read a story once about the trouble a shelter had adopting out their black cats. One volunteer tried giving them unusual (but cute) names people don't usually associate with black cats; Jellybean in this case, and they found homes for the cats much faster. Another shelter put bright, colorful fabric down for the kitties to sleep and sit on. Ordinarily black cats naturally fade into the shadows in a cage, and the fabric makes them stand out more when people come to look for cats. Good luck adopting the black cats after October; I personally think they are wonderful animals ![]()
Re: The New Unicorn
I have a cat who gets that same worried expression (he's dark brown); nicely different Halloween angle
Nekkochan wrote:I want this one, not for Halloween, but to wear to the shelter, where black cats always get adopted last - and we can't adopt them out in October.
Same at our shelter! We're even having a 2-for-1 special this month to get them into homes.
I hope this prints, I know loads of shelter volunteers would buy it!

We had a black cat sale - put them all in one room, put bows on the boys and colorful glittery scrunchies on the girls. Only one of them was adopted *sigh*. I think our "10 Reasons to Adopt a Black Cat" list - with reason #1 being "Because they're the least likely to get adopted" - is doing more good. I've had a few kids actually tell me they were taking a black one for that reason.
Our adoptable cats are in open rooms, so they don't fade into the shadows as much - but I like the idea of unusual names. Have to talk to the staff about that one. You can only use the name "Inky" so many times.
Re: The New Unicorn
I'm so happy to see all the black cat love in here, and everyone's stories - thanks for the votes and the sharing! I kind of feel like I want everyone to post pictures of their cuties;)
Truly so sad about the superstitions against them and the trouble finding adoptive homes for black kittens/cats
Nekkochan - reading about the black cat sale and all the cute efforts - (bow ties and glittery scrunchies!) and only one adoption... aww man that is heartbreaking :'(
The idea about unusual cute names sounds like it's worth a try! Here is me brainstorming some cute but maybe unexpected black cat names: marshmellow, munchkin, cupcake, sweet pea, snowball, tinkerbell, twinkie, minnie, buttercup, snuggles... hey this is fun =)

I would suggest a thesaurus for your shelter. "Ebony" would be a beautiful name for a long lanky cat. Teak or Mahagony might be fun too. All those fun dark colors. We too had a shelter cat that was black. She came unnamed but my Dad ended up calling her Inky. She was American Shirthair mixed with Burmese. Technically black on black stripes but they were only visible in the sun. And she liked to do summersaults. Sixteen years later and the new kitten we have now, Neko, well she makes Inky look like a loafer in comparison! Ink was never this bad a kitten! Beware of the dilute calico. They know they're cute and with get away with murder!
PS I want to send this shirt to my sis who has a rescued Bombay.
I love my big fat black kitty. She is a foster cat that we kept. She is the most loving cat. She never goes outside, but that is a given. Black cats rock!
I really really hope this goes up! I'm absolutely in for at least one for myself, but I'm sensing a bday present for my cat loving mom also. We both have two black cats and they are just the sweetest things!
You definitely have my vote ![]()
Re: The New Unicorn
This is something I would really like to have year round! A lot of the shirts are way too time-sensitive. This one is just about kitties being discriminated against.
Nekkochan wrote:I want this one, not for Halloween, but to wear to the shelter, where black cats always get adopted last - and we can't adopt them out in October.
Oh, that makes me so sad. I had 2 black cats growing up. We named them (creatively) Midnight and Midnight 2.
Re: The New Unicorn
Love it and my black kitty too!
baconnorntx wrote:Love it and my black kitty too!
I need two of this shirt.
Love it!
Re: The New Unicorn
I have a black cat, and I still think this is cheesy.
Re: The New Unicorn
@akayeh - I will try to remember to beware the dilute calico!
PS. I'm pretty sure my black kitty (rescued) is a Bombay based on her looks and personality.
@rikasmom - Yes they do!:D
@spazzyhilo - Thanks!
And they are the sweetest - though sometimes hard to see in low light;)
@wasdexdee - That's what I was going for - I'm not really a fan of shirts that only can be worn a short amount of time. Thanks!
@runnerfrog13 - It is so sad, makes me want to go adopt more kitties! hehe Midnight and Midnight 2.
@baconnorntx - thanks fellow black kittyer!
@propertyofstp - Glad to hear it, thanks!

I believe we've done nearly all the synonyms of black out there, multiple times, in various spellings! Ebony, Midnight, Sharpie, Inky, Coal... Nobody will let me name a black one Rorschach, evidently it's too hard to spell... We don't name 'em all on colors, though - Basil, Bear, Isis & Armani are some of our other black cats.

I was naming non-black synonym names on purpose, in case that adds another odd 'cuteness' factor... like I wouldn't imagine a black cat being named jellybean, but it definitely adds the cute!

I mentioned the idea to one of the other volunteers yesterday, and she was all for it. Now I need to get the staff on board! We got a passel of 3-week-old black kittens the other day & they're Wishful, Willful, Whisper, and some other W names.

Those are sweet names too. Though willfull might make me think twice;)
That's great the volunteer was all for it... hope the staff goes for it and the cute naming helps the black kitties find good homes! I keep thinking about what you wrote about them getting adopted last...really sad!
PS. Not that I advise these as names, but my black kitten in the shelter was named 'Cairo' (since changed), her black and white sister was named 'Barcelona' (also changed), and another sister 'Prague'(adopted by someone else).

I was thinking the same thing! This shirt would be great to sell to animal rescues. I know several people at mine would wear this!
jasneko wrote:purrr.
I love the design. We have a black cat named Edgar that has green eyes just like the picture. He is the friendliest cat I have ever seen. Every Halloween my wife gets excited about all the stuff with "Edgars" on it, and wants to buy them all. She also wants to adopt all of the little black kitties out there, and would if we had the space.
Re: The New Unicorn
I'm in the midst of adopting a kitten right now- and this shirt makes me drift toward the black ones! Regardless of what color cat, or even if you have a cat, this is wonderful. I would wear this all the time.
Re: The New Unicorn
This looks just like my kitty, Peanut! I'm glad that this shirt can be worn year-round, though as a Halloween baby, I feel like I can wear Halloween shirts whenever, right? :P

Black cats have the best personalities! And remember, the world's best cat toy is another cat - take two, they're small!
Best black cat name ever, "Hoschech Mizraim," Hebrew for "the blackness of Egypt."

Replying to myself to clarify, this phrase refers to the plague of darkness, and is not any kind of racial comment.

Nekkochan wrote:Nobody will let me name a black one Rorschach, evidently it's too hard to spell...
I LOVE this name for a black cat =) I have three black cat rescues (full for the time being), but the next one I adopt that needs a name, might end up being Rorschach =)
Also, I simply MUST have this shirt. Hope it sells tomorrow =(
I love black cats since I m 8 years old. I live in Argentina and I came to visit family in the US when I was 8. They had 2 black cats and I felt in love so badly that I wanted my parents to let me bring a black cat from the US to Argentina with me. (It was not possible).
After other beautiful cats, now I have my black cat in Argentina. She is the most cute and nice cat I ever met. She purrs and licks my nose and softly bites my chin.
Her name is Canela, which means Cinnamon in Spanish, and I had many questions about why that s her name if she is black and not brown/cinnamon color. Well... my name is "Marina" and I ve nothing to do with marines or with the sea ("mar" in Spanish).
PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU WILL PRINT / SELL THIS SHIRT ANYWHERE ELSE.

Re: The New Unicorn
I would wear this shirt year round. I love the black kitties and would buy one for my friends who have black cats.
Re: The New Unicorn
This shirt is so cute. It reminds me of my own black kitty, Fifi. She gives me that look when I am making something to eat - "what about me? are you going to share?".
