Had this been in August I'm sure that would be a good selling point.

Good thing you have plenty of time to prepare for this year's event!

Arr, this fills me sails, but might it be too textual for that scurvy dog Rejectionator?

Re: Some Translation Required

While I'm amused by the shirt, I think a wall of text with some art that looks like little more than clipart resources is pushing towards being rejected.

This should be fine. Kevlar's design from the last derby wasn't rejected, and Thatrobert printed with a shirt (in a "no text only" derby) where the "graphic elements' were borders around the text. You can have as much text as you want, as long as you have some kind of graphic element.

Some kind of graphic element really gets pushed, especially in this derby, I'm seeing, by faded watermarks covered in text and, as with this one, some clip art with a focus on the text.

Woot has different levels of text allowed depending on the derby.
Some derbies are "no text allowed", which means, well, no text at all, not even symbols like "!" or "*".
Some derbies are "incidental text only", which means you can have text, but it the main focus of has to be graphic, and you can't rely on the text to make your selling point.
Some derbies, like this one, are "no text only", which means you can have all the text you want, and that text can be the focus of the shirt, it just needs to have a graphic element of some sort in it.
Hopefully this made sense.

I like this design, but I have to agree with another poster in that it seems to push the boundaries of the "no text-only designs" rule. If you removed the graphics from this shirt, the joke and meaning would remain; they're just embellishments to a funny list.

Compare that to Kevlar's design last week; without the green glow of the monochrome screen, then it was just a line of text and meant nothing, really. The glow gave the illusion of an old school computer monitor. In his case, it was a necessary graphic element.

Looks like the trolls have left their mark here also Hope this upsets the hell out of them... once something is in the fog I have to really LOVE it to vote for it - I figure it doesn't really need my help - but today I have voted for every design that the trolls have tried to trash.

Simple, clever, GMV

Thanks for the support and the critique! An artist certainly needs both to stay motivated and to improve. I chose to draw basic graphics for this shirt because I was going for a simple design. Having spent hours and sometimes days working on more complicated drawings that don't connect with the audience, I just wanted to keep this design uncomplicated. I'm happy people are enjoying it!

I'm among those surprised to see this in the fog. The humour isn't particularly innovative or clever, and the graphics feel more like a tacked on afterthought. I get more of a "cheesy tourist tat" feel from this than anything ...

Voted.

IF you don't like, don't vote for it. If you feel you need to provide a critique ... provide constructive ones. Like I feel if you had tried this style or moved this to here.... don't just say it looks bad/stupid/wrong. That does not help the artist and is in bad taste.

Woot is a playground of many talented and upcoming artists. Let's keep it to supportive.

Seriously???

Booze, wikipedia defines as: "an informal term for an alcoholic beverage. " http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Booze

In your link, "The word grog refers to a variety of alcoholic beverages."
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grog

The difference astounds me, at least I think that's what is astounding me, or maybe I just don't want to state what is really astounding.

Though I think it's a bit text heavy I think it's a cute idea. I would have preferred there to be a bit more custom art on it and less clipart, to give it a more personal, unique feel to it.

So help me out, Woot: The hook design got rejected yesterday for "no clip art", but this design which obviously has clip art, as well (see here and here for examples) has not been rejected for the same thing?

Also, the font it uses (Pieces of Eight) is for personal use only, not royalty free for commercial use.

Just wondering what the difference is?

That clipart is not matching what is on the shirt. Boat's not close at all. Just because the artwork is simple doesn't mean it's clipart. I know the artist and one of her styles if very simple artwork.

Grrlmarvel is correct. I didn't use clipart. The images are simple, but I drew them. As for the font, I got it from a different site that claimed it was free. I'm pretty careful about checking to make sure what I'm using is commercial-friendly. I've actually had that font for a while on my computer so maybe it changed to personal since I downloaded it. It's easy enough to change out for a free font. I've already made the change on my print file and sent it to woot.
