There’s an elegance to math, sure, but when you’re just trying to grasp the higher, more theoretical concepts, you can easily feel crushed. And it doesn’t help that most of us learn those hard-to-understand facts in cheaply designed buildings, from people who aren’t getting raises this year, while also being told by every other part of our culture that having real knowledge isn’t cool at all.

After a certain point, it becomes a struggle, not to put the tree where it should properly be, but to move that tree just the teeny bit required to wriggle out from underneath and move on. Of course, that means that later down the road, “math” is associated with being uncomfortable and sad and confused and trapped under a heavy tree. Is it any wonder so many people just don’t care to do calculus?
