Re: Tetris in the style of MC Escher

This idea sprung on me at the last minute and I feel it turned out better than I had originally expected. Tetris is probably done way too often but usually its done for its simplicity, so I was only going to do something based on Tetris if it was fitting enough. Looking at Escher's waterfall, this just seemed like the perfect setting for tetris, cause the pieces never end! Anyways, hope you all like it!

Ovaltina, my goat this is so nicee. I dont like the white tee tho if it was black or asphalt or red. I would have handed 10 dollars to you. You still got my vote tho

I wanted to try and keep to the Escher style and not have any color, and between black and white shirts the white definitely looked a lot better

I think you made the right decision. It looks really good. I kind of want to see one block colored. One red one in there something or something, just to break it up a little. I think that would be neat, but it's still got my vote. Good job!

I didn't vote for this at first because, let's be honest, I wanted to win XD But you're gaining ground fast and for good reasons (Escher is awesome, Tetris is awesome, this shirt is awesome, etc.). My only gripe is that it doesn't have the same sense of sketchiness that Escher has in his work. But... it's still a great shirt Here's a vote in hoping the shirt goes somewhere with it!

Ah, but one piece falling in this case would have made the "waterfall" incredibly boring no?
also, the spacing between the blocks in that case would have left it with less than ten total pieces in the shirt.
that would look stipud. the correct choice was made.

Thanks! I really appreciate the gesture, as well as any one else that gave me a vote. Since I submitted this three and a half days late, I was afraid it was too late to get that many votes, but it seems to be going well. Just a little farther and this can be a print! (Although the Da Vinci blue shell is so far in the lead, no one will ever catch up to that one)

Escher does have a sketchy feel to all of his stuff, and I actually drew the thing out in pencil and had a pretty good idea of how I wanted it. After getting to photoshop though, I only started using the program like a couple weeks back and wasn't able to translate the style acceptably, and wound up liking the clear cut version because from a distance it was easier to decipher. That, and its hard to see but all the tetris pieces have the tetris coloring to them, and it looked funny having a sketchy picture with clear cut tetris pieces (close up as follows)

You might want to check with woot to see if they can print this as is. It currently has at least 8 shades of gray, possibly more. Maybe they treat grays differently than other colors, not sure. Or they might be able to reduce it for you.

I pulled just out of large areas so I wouldn't get any artifacts. The smaller areas may or may not have extra colors.

Actually, when i first submitted the picture i was stuck on threadless submission rules and thought there were 8 allowed, so yes this entry does have 8. I re-subbed a ever slightly changed print ready version to then with 6 instead of 8 though, and got rid of two of the colors. I didnt include a box for the white, because its the shirt color =>

Still looks good, but you might want to be careful in the future. Technically people aren't getting what they're voting for. I doubt most people will care because it's still a great design, 6 or 8 colors. People who get rejected for submitting a design with too many colors might have something to say though.

I think it's less of an issue in this case because it's so hard to tell the difference. Two colours less doesn't detract from the design at all - it's hardly even noticeable. I'd argue that using 8 colours (even with the option at Threadless) was excessive, and there's probably a way to trim it below 6 without losing any impact or 3D-ness or what have you.

I have to applaud you for noticing though. You might like this game - Test Your Colour IQ. Basically you're supposed to align a bunch of swatches in order of hue. I got a score of 15, which is pathetic compared to several of my friends who got 0 (lower score is better, of course).

(Edit: you'll have to choose a region before you can get to the game page, heh)

Anyway, congrats fofmock on making it to the fog, though I have to hurt on behalf of SkekTek. Good luck these last 12 hours!

yeah... I do understand this and you dont understand how nervous it had made me. The second I had noticed the 6 color rule, I sent an email explaining and with a fix, and I also noticed the following rule =>
"Additionally, we reserve the right to make changes to any design for production purposes - for instance, reducing 7 colors to 6, or changing the shirt color if it's one that we don't have access to."
meaning that woot could have a derby winner with 7 or 8 colors, and changed the colors on their own to 6, and then sold the shirt that is technically not what they voted for because of slight color modifications.

Re: Tetris in the style of MC Escher

It bothers me that this is getting a pass on the six color rule. How many past entries have gotten rejected for having 7 or 8 colors, even inadvertent extra colors? If you noticed right away that you'd submitted it with 8 colors, and you withdrew it and resubmitted it with 6 colors, it would still be up here at the top, and there wouldn't be any reason for anyone to be disturbed by this. But you didn't. You noticed, and rather than resubmit it then, you went straight to woot and tried to get a pass on the rule. That bothers me as much as it will bother me if woot gives you a free pass on this.

look, I was already unable to participate till three days into the thing, and then took another day to realize the rules were different than i thought. Im sorry if it bothers you that i made a change and woot didnt reject me, and if i thought i had the time to resub i would have. But my picture doesnt hinge on color, and the color change is so minor that unless you stared at the two you wouldnt even be likely to tell a difference.

The argument you make, that the color change is so minor, certainly holds true for previously rejected designs with a 7th color. Is it fair to those designers for you to get a pass on something they were nailed for? Subtle differences, like your design has, is what makes them look just a little better. That 7th color makes your shading look better than if it weren't there, and that gets you a few extra votes, even if it isn't a conscious choice made by the voters. Maybe the Rembrandt would have gained a couple of votes and thereby beaten this design, had he used 8 colors.

As far as your submission being late, and you not having enough time to get the votes if you resubmitted, that's just too bad. The contest is designed as a race- the whole point of it is to see who comes up with the best design in the limited time available. You made a mistake. In a marathon, you would have had time to correct that mistake and catch up. You probably did have that time, had you caught your mistake and acted on it right away. I submitted a design 2 weeks ago on Tuesday afternoon, and ended up in 11th place with over 300 votes. Had I submitted it on Monday at 2:00 AM it might have gotten enough votes (maybe not, but I wish I had). I think you would likely have had enough votes as well, had you corrected your error in public, with a big mea culpa. The point is not whether the late entry would have had enough time to catch up, the point is whether it is fair to the competition for you to get to use 8 colors when everyone else has to use 6. I just don't think it is.

They wouldn't make this statement if there was no intent to ever make an exception in the rules.

On the submission page, it says "guidelines" not rules - the guidelines outline what will be printed. Granted, you could take what it says in the FAQ, "We determine that the design is in violation of Woot's policies and practices in some way other than those specified here." to mean 6+ colors is an outright rejection reason - and I could see why that would be interpreted that way. But then the FAQ also says

"Entries that run afoul of these guidelines may be deleted, if we feel like it. Additionally, we reserve the right to make changes to any design for production purposes - for instance, reducing 7 colors to 6, or changing the shirt color if it's one that we don't have access to."

Emphasis mine. Which leads me to believe that rejection is always a case by case basis in terms of meeting Woot's technical standards, and given that this design could easily be reduced to 6 colors with no noticeable difference, perhaps Woot chose to make an exception.

Josephus wrote:" Its people like you that like to return food because it looks funny, or try to sound important by spewing speeches on things you have no control over."

Now that was an unwarranted, ugly personal comment. All I've ever said was that it was unfair for this design to stay in when other designs with more than six colors get rejected. I haven't escalated my comments from the first one I made, that I didn't think this was fair for woot to allow this one when they have rejected so many others for having 7 or 8 colors. Good luck next week.

This shirt is an example of doing the right thing at the expense of the rules. The additional colors may have garnered some extra depth but the color depth of this shirt is not its selling point. It is unfair to think that people were voting this up because of the color. People voted this up for the concept. Sure, it is unfair to people in the past who were rejected over too many colors but I would prefer that Woot get it right this time than to reject this on a technicality in the interest of being fair.

Josephus, I don't know if you realize it or not, but overly insisting that I went behind the public eye to ask woot if its okay, and saying things about my design may seem like they are not personal comments about me, but they are. Everything you said I took personally, and when you couldn't understand the idea that mistakes happen and I ment no harm in my submission, it led me to lash back. Trust me, the fear of rejection has scared me to the point that I will always remember the color limits, and thanks for cutting a relatively new derbiest just a little slack. Anyways, thanks all for voting, and some backing me, others im sorry if you feel slighted by my mistake. hope to see some more support for my designs in the future!

I can appreciate that. My perspective is that had it been me, I would probably have responded just as you did, though without the personal comments. My frustration is with the inconsistencies in rejections, not with people trying to get their designs printed. I probably didn't get that across well enough, and I'm sorry about that.

Awesome shirt, I really liked it the moment I saw it, so I HAD to buy one... my first purchase from this section of woot. Question for you though - I pointed it out to one of my friends, but it had already sold out by that point. I believe the shirts get reposted on the site however, and I was wondering if you could just post the link for me so that I can direct him to it.

Thanks a lot, and congratulations on your awesome entry!
