Im sorry if it bothers you that i made a change and woot didnt reject me, and if i thought i had the time to resub i would have. But my picture doesnt hinge on color, and the color change is so minor that unless you stared at the two you wouldnt even be likely to tell a difference.
The argument you make, that the color change is so minor, certainly holds true for previously rejected designs with a 7th color. Is it fair to those designers for you to get a pass on something they were nailed for? Subtle differences, like your design has, is what makes them look just a little better. That 7th color makes your shading look better than if it weren't there, and that gets you a few extra votes, even if it isn't a conscious choice made by the voters. Maybe the Rembrandt would have gained a couple of votes and thereby beaten this design, had he used 8 colors.
As far as your submission being late, and you not having enough time to get the votes if you resubmitted, that's just too bad. The contest is designed as a race- the whole point of it is to see who comes up with the best design in the limited time available. You made a mistake. In a marathon, you would have had time to correct that mistake and catch up. You probably did have that time, had you caught your mistake and acted on it right away. I submitted a design 2 weeks ago on Tuesday afternoon, and ended up in 11th place with over 300 votes. Had I submitted it on Monday at 2:00 AM it might have gotten enough votes (maybe not, but I wish I had). I think you would likely have had enough votes as well, had you corrected your error in public, with a big mea culpa. The point is not whether the late entry would have had enough time to catch up, the point is whether it is fair to the competition for you to get to use 8 colors when everyone else has to use 6. I just don't think it is.
