I got really busy for a while. My wife was out of town last night, I was bored and the derby allowed text... the stars aligned. Stayed up til 4:30am finishing it, though. It's gonna be a rough day at work.

I noticed the link in your signature and went to take a look. "We built this city on wheat and ore." HO. LY. AP. CRAY. I love it. But I can't bring myself to buy from any print-on-demand store. Is there any way you could try getting the design to a deal-a-day-you-keep-the-rights site like TeeFury or Ript Apparel?

And was that one from a past woot derby?

I'll look into that. I didn't know that sort of thing existed. That one was not a derby submission. I specifically designed it to be a vinyl print design through Spreadshirt. I have to admit, of all the Spreadshirt designs I have, the final product of that one is one of the cleanest. If I remember to do so, I'll post some macros of the final product.

Thanks for tootin' the ol' Perpetually Passe' horn for me. I don't think I've sold a shirt there in months.

They had the Panhandle on their schedule, but they realized that it would cost over $75 in gas to get there from their closest stop.

It's too bad how far the suits scaled back the tour. They already made these shirts with "World" on them.

I agree. A real black concert tee has a design on each side. But I was convinced that if I only had one side to choose, it should be on the back.

Maybe I'll post a design for the front here. And if people want, they can get it silkscreened onto it after they buy the shirt. Hmmm...

Exactly what I thought of when I read the Derby theme and this seems to be the only design to have taken the tour shirt idea and ran with it. As someone else mentioned it would be cool for a little logo or something for the front but you have your limitations. Great job.

So if Woot printed 2 sides for derby entries, then this is probably the design I'd put on the front of it (I know the effort was minimal - it's just to fill out the front).

If the design wins, I'll post the print ready of this somewhere so you can have it done if that's the sort of thing you're into. Since it's a single color, it wouldn't be too expensive to get a custom screen shop to add it.

Nobody voting for the shirt should expect this front design anywhere on the product if it does happen to survive the fog. This is just for the giggles.

Whuldbron, WI isn't a classy enough Wisconsin date for you? I'll have you know that their venue, the indoor gazeebo grandstand at Chick'N'Putt Family Miniature Indoor Rockin' Golf, is one of the largest par 3 holes in Western Wisconsin. It is an awe-inspiring site to behold. When they get the kleig lights going on that thing and fire off the pyrotechnics during the opening number, they draw the fire marshal EVERY TIME - and he has to drive from three counties over. That's how far the fans will come to see a cowbell gig.

Agreed. Don't get me wrong, Gargrazz, the design is wonderfully executed and I would normally vote for it on those grounds alone. But honestly, the cowbell thing is getting extremely old. You can buy any number of cowbell-related shirts on any number of other websites. I appreciate your honesty and your opinion. I can't speak for how overdone the joke is - but I've latched on to your comment about how wonderfully executed it is. So that begs the question, how many wonderfully executed cowbell shirts have been done and shouldn't Woot be the ones to print it? ;^P

I've got a lot of great comments about the design and it's been a LONG time since I've fogged (after dozens and dozens of entries that I took a lot of pride in). Topping 600 votes will have to be satisfying enough until I get around to designing another one.

Yeah, I'm going to chime in only to say that I think this design is exactly what the derby is about. You definitely captured the essence of a tour t-shirt.

I get that this is a totally new take on the joke and that the design is far superior to the other cowbell shirts available. However, since the joke is nearing a decade old (the Cowbell skit originally appeared on SNL April 8, 2000), I will not be voting or buying this shirt because of the cowbell reference.

Obviously, I disagree with the multitude of wooters who voted for your shirt - but congratulations on gaining this much momentum for your design. I'm looking forward to more from you.

Can't vote for this one. I appreciate the design quality (clean, balanced, good technique), but I don't really like the pop-culture reference, and I think it's a little text-heavy.

Your post helped me identify my design preferences, actually. The designs I lean toward tend to be visually appealing and fall into one of three categories:

1) Jaw-droppingly cool looking with no context required to appreciate the art.

2) Geek humor that applies to the geek elite. (So if I have to explain it, at least I can feel superior in a nerdy way.)

3) Contextually hilarious content that I don't have to explain to anyone ever.

I don't consider myself accomplished enough to pull off #1 without a lot of effort and time. Leonryan's "Sex Drugs" is a great example of this and I've voted for it - even though it's probably going to be the one that knocks me out of the top three in the end.

The second category is hard to pull off in certain derbies. Ensmind's shirt "Infinite Pi" is pretty close to that idea - but it's muddied up by the fact that its a fake band shirt. Pi as a concept has some funny applications - but this design doesn't really tie everything together well enough to be accessible to anyone outside this derby. Friends that 'get' pi humor still won't get the fact that this is a band shirt. So I'm forced to constantly provide context. This shirt with no text at all is extremely cool. The text breaks it (in my opinion).

So that brings me to the third category and I chose to make a straight up fake band concert shirt. But what good is it to make a realistic fake band shirt if the "band" in question's name means nothing to the viewer? They'll think it's just some band and people will constantly ask you if they're any good. Then you have to explain they don't exist and why you bought the shirt in the first place.

The answer was to tie the concept into something immediately accessible to 90% of the population. There may have been other concepts to choose. But in a drunken stupor, I chose cowbell. The rest is history.

So this is a long post to essentially say that I put too much thought into my t-shirt decisions. Great art on its own is fine. But the moment you add text or a "story" of some kind - that becomes a much more complex dialogue with the viewer and it can quickly limit a design's potential for me. I try to avoid designing shirts that make no sense outside of the derby context.

Thanks to everyone that's commented and voted so far. This derby is always harder than you think and I'm honored to be flirting with the fog.

I agree with your first paragraph. This design IS what this derby is all about. That's why I voted for it.

And yes, the skit may be nearing 10 years old but I can't think of many skits aside from D*ck in a box & Tina Fey's Sara Palin that will retain their appeal 10 years from now.

So yeah. I disagree with your disagreement of my vote and I fully intend to stay up until midnight each night attempting to not only buy this shirt... but to be the "First Sucker" thank you very much.

I also appreciate that the band is showing Kansas love. I swear the most driven through only to be avoided state by bands.

He had some ridiculous notions about 3/3 time. The rest of the guys thought it would just sound like a racket if he was hitting hitting 3/3 and they were all hitting 4/4. They crunched some numbers over a round of ice cream and they realized that they would only be ringing together every 12th note.

Now you tell me, do you want to go to a show where 11/12th's of it is out of sync?

We in the cowbell biz still consider that 'ringing'. It sounds a bit more musically relevant than 'hit it with a stick to make a clunk sound'. Ask the drummers. They tried saying stuff like, "Dude, you hecka' hit the top of that thing with your sticks in a really... great way." They decided it was easier to just say, "You wailed." The drum is not a whale, but they got it because it was fewer words. That's good marketing.

How about "strike" instead of "ring"? It's way more RAWK.

Re: Monsters Of Cowbell World Tour

God, I'm being such a meanie. Admitting, five seconds before voting closes, my true thoughts on two of the top four designs.

I'm sure this has been said already, but I think the cowbell thing is pretty exhausted. Plus, I just....don't see the "art" here. I see the text and I see the halftones and the silhouetted woman, but..

...I just......don't see anything that someone else on the internet hasn't already made funny in the past. It's like taking credit for someone else's joke. Stamping your name on an entire trend.

Ah well, congrats on the print. It seems there are still alot of folks who are all about the cowbell.

You may have just taken it up to 11 with that suggestion. I'm going to Twitter my cowbell feed and get everyone on board.

I'm not sure I've got the print. We'll see.

Your design has had my vote all week, so I appreciate your feedback. I completely understand your position. Different strokes for different folks and all.

Thanks for all the feedback and votes, everyone.

So any chance of the band picking me up on the way to their Kansas stop? Some drunk driver "Monster Truck'd" my car (sadly, seriously) so I need a ride to the show.

Between hassles with insurance, rental car company problems (namely a company that should have the planet Uranus in front of their name), and the horror of having to go car shopping... I NEED this shirt to print.

Munchy Attack If you can find the name of this artist & real song title I'll buy you a daily woot shirt (your choice what day)

Dystopia Dark Lager, Where the Wild Parties at?, B.A. Bearacus, and many more wanted in XXL(PLEASE!!!)
Edgar Allen Poe shall remained headlock'd until Nevermore is reckoned.

Sure, but is it cool if they drop you off a couple blocks away? They get totally embarrassed when they're spotted carpooling with fans to the show.

I completely understand. It's much appreciated.

The spring was a souvenir from the Jeep that did it... At least my car fought back.

Dear Artist,

You got ripped off, this shirt is much more wearable than the one that says "sex and drugs" on it.

Not everyone can wear a shirt that says those words to where they work; and or around town ect.

It's a shame that you got 4th place.

Please keep up the great shirt designs.

that was fun while it lasted!

While I think the cowbell joke is overdone, this is immediately recognizable as a fake band shirt. I don't like the idea of having a blank front though - are you allowed to have a design on both sides?

Ok I read the rest of the shirt's thread- I guess not. That's too bad.
