Wow, your texture work and coloring is off the hook. I have no idea what that means, but whatever hook they're talking about this is definitely way, way off it.

If you actually read the image, he ripped it out of the ground and is holding the pile of dirt. Making him "flower murderer." (haha)
Very well drawn, I like the pallette! Seems like you see a lot of the "intimidating thing being cute" concept on woot, though.

Yes, the concepts are too similar in my opinion. It's a bit close to this one as well:

Nice work all the same, but the "nature robot" has been done to death IMHO.

So... apparently anything with a robot is now old?? I got owned by woot! do you people do all day? Sit around trying to find something that's barely even remotely close to something else and twist your panties over it?
I think it's a fantastic shirt. GMV and I'll buy it if it wins.

Just embedding images of the two other t-shirts that have been specifically mentioned.
Though, it seems to me that since the derbies are strictly popularity contests, it's inevitable that a lot of the winners will be similar to each other.
Indeed, if you are concerned more with winning than artistry, presumably you should mine previous winners for your design ideas. (I do not intend this as any kind of comment on patrickspens motivations or art. In fact, this entry GMV.)

I don't think anyone is trying to claim that robots in and of themselves are off-limits for designs. Woot has printed *myriad* robot tees in the past (I myself own at least half a dozen, including the Dsladek design in question.)
However, the difference is that almost all of those shirts featured their own scenario or 'story', if you will. While they all feature robots, no one would accuse "The Awakening", "Squeeze", "Spring-ATRON", "Onward Robots!", "Bird-Powered Robot", "Almost Human", or "The Power of Giving" of being too similar to one another. (Just to name a few examples.)
The issue here is that this *concept* has won a derby before. (Steampunk Robot + Lonely looking bit of foliage.) Even the comments are eerily similar; if I recall correctly, Dsladek's shirt also drew multiple comparisons to Wall-E and the Iron Giant.
Woot claims to be dedicated to printing new and unique pieces; IMHO, examples like this are exactly why the "Similar Shirts Exist" rule was created.

You can do a lot of different things with robots. The point myself, and I believe the others are trying to make is that there are two t-shirts that have won in past derbies that depict some old beat up robot of the steampunk variety, holding vegetation in it's hand.
Again, I think this design is nicely done, but not as dynamic conceptually as either of the two designs that came before it. regardless, the point is...
Similar.Shirts.Exist.
and at this very site to boot.

EVERY idea exists. It's art! You can make comparisons all day long! The fact is, the artist took the original concept and made it comical. You wouldn't expect a giant robot to be holding a tiny flower.
If anything, I'd say this is a lot closer to the idea of Frankenstein's monster than other "earthy robots." Yes... there's another robot holding a flower, (actually it looks more like it's casting or fabricating a flower)... but it's not a normal flower at all. Yes, there's another robot around .... "foliage" (which is, in and of itself, and extremely general term).
The fact is, THIS robot is gargantuan, overbearing, and yet it's holding a tiny flower; at least to the best of it's ability. All of which plays off the title of the original work.

It's "their" job. Their.
And we're not hating. Not one of us has criticized the artwork itself. We're merely pointing out that at least one other shirt (I'm not sure about the Drakxxx comparison) already exists that is undeniably and incredibly similar. And you realize that by "hating" on us "haters," you are merely continuing the paradigm? Or do you not even know what that means?

Regarding the similarity of "The Beast Sleeps" outside of the very general similarity of Robots and Plants, the idea being conveyed is completely different, I don't quite see how it could fall under the idea of similarity unless you really want to nit-pick about even the most generic ideas.
As for Energy Harvester, I one can easily draw similarities, but at the same time, I think it comes down to the intent of what the image is trying to say, and once again one could pick out two different themes.
I do think that some people throw out the "Similar Shirts Exist" argument just a tad too quickly, especially when it's on such a broad idea that we have seen all over the place. Many of these ideas have been done before, many of these ideas have been thought up before by countless others, what makes two similar looking ideas stand out from one another is the overall message that the image is trying to convey, and even similar images can be worlds apart, which is what I see between this shirt and the previous two shirts mentioned.
If we only go for the most original ideas possible, every shirt here will become esoteric. The idea here is to not only create cool shirts that people want to wear, but you gotta make them with ideas that people understand. The "Similar Shirt Exists" cry is good when you have a design that both looks the same as another shirt, and conveys the same idea of that shirt.

You can definitely draw similarities between this idea and Energy Harvester. But I do also think that there is a difference in intent for what is going on in both of these shirts. In Energy Harvest it looks like the plant will be put to use, meanwhile here was just a have a robot (non-living entity) marveling over these plant which is actually living. It's two different takes on a similar idea allowing them to convey two different situations.
I think it comes down to how far in you are willing to look at the picture. I think just going by "Oh hey look, it's a robot holding a plant" is a little too broad to call this shirt too similar to a previous one.

I think they're pretty different shirts. I wouldn't classify the Harvester as steampunk, where's the steam? No smoke, no exhaust vents, not very gritty looking. The Harvester has more of future feel to me. It is reaching for a flower, although a very different one from the entry.
I have the second shirt and they don't look similar to me at all. The figure in that one is an industrialized city/mountain. No one who's ever remarked on that shirt has ever said it looked like a robot, I usually get mountain king.
Plus I like this one because it's poignant not cutesy, and not a pun. And like someone else mentioned it works with the derby but also looks good out of the context of the derby. Needless to say after all this commentary it GMV.

Just wanted to say I love the detail and shading texture of the piece! The blue really glows against the greys of the rest of the piece and just having the bit of color enhances it a lot.
It reminds me of Laputa most, with the robot holding the flower when they're on the floating castle, but despite any similarities that can be drawn I think it stands strongly on its own. Good luck! :D
