Derby #211: Everyday 8-Bit
Hey, this Derby's over. When you're finished reliving past glories, check out what's going on in the Derby right now. It's probably even cooler. Or at least newer.
Sometimes the dull drudgery of everyday life would just be more excited if we lived in a video game. Imagine attending your stupid morning meeting under the guise of a Real Time Strategy game, or walking your dog in an FPS. Of course we're video game hipsters, so today's games are boring to us and we'd prefer the simple majesty of yesteryear's 8-bit games. So this week combine the two and show us mundane, every day tasks re-imagined as 8-bit games. Maybe you're a little block of pixels in a tie rapidly tapping A & B to stay awake in a sales meeting, or a warrior in a magical grocery store hunting for groceries in an RPG, or an innocent paperboy just trying to deliver the post while dodging dogs and lawnmowers and cars- Nah, that last one would never work. Just keep the situation mundane and the artwork pixelated. Now for the rules:
- Some text is okay. But no text-only designs are allowed; you must have a graphical element.
- No actual video game characters or art. That should be obvious.
- We won't print the full description any more since everyone should know, but the Mystery Icon is still in effect until further notice.
And a special update/warning: we appreciate you guys putting effort into designing neat little animated .GIF thumbnails to encourage people to vote for your designs. Unfortunately, some people have decided to push the limits of taste and it's becoming impossible to police them all, so from now on ALL thumbnails must show only your design. No animation, no text, no pleas to vote, just a thumbnail of your submission. You can still play with your signature file for your posts if you're so inclined.
